Not sure yet why, but the tip of the brush is broken and sticks out. :(

I am very sorry. I hope that it is not a serious problem for him.

Got a message from Jason Crean just now. He said it will be fine. He told me to put coconut oil on it. He uses it for any beak injury.

they have a brush on the tongue a lorikeet? a friend on my FB feed is rehabbing a trumpeter swan who ate a treble hook. they removed it, and said her tongue would heal and regenerate. so i suppose his too will regenerate?
he is lovely

Thanks everyone. He seems fine now. There is a tiny tip of the upper beak broken and growing back. I think that allowed the tip of the tongue to dry out.

It's more like the whole thing has little brushy things all the way down it. Not exactly like a lorikeet.

Someone pm'd me on FB concerned about how much was gone and said he may not be able to clean out his beak. He has one that lost over half of his tongue, and he has to clean out his beak. Or it can cause a bacterial infection. I explained this was just a very tiny bit. Like two of the little brushy things. They were no more than 1/4" or less.

This is like reading a sci-fi story about an alien species. .... :wtf: Its amazing how much difference there is from one bird to the next. It's alarming to me that you can pull off part of a birds tongue and its ok....LOL!!!! He is quite beautiful, too. :) I hope his beak will heal perfectly.

Yep, a number of things are different with aracari but they are delightful birds and quite loving. No noise makers and they do learn to enjoy the whole family.
