We recently adopted this girl and her beak has gradually been getting flaky and white-ish.
She seems grumpier than usual and a little more sleepy.
It doesn't seem to be bothering her. She lets me pull her food nasties off....

The second picture, the Nare looks a little off...???

Amazon can get dry plugs , often from diet low in vitamin A. Offer lots of peppers and cooked sweet potato.

Over all looks pretty ok to me, except the one Nare tho unsure on that.

We've got plenty of great folks with Amazon so I'm sure they will share their knowledge

Yep! Definitely clogged up. I was so focused on her beak I didn't even notice.

We are working on new foods but it's a struggle.
She's terrified of anything new.

Thanks for looking! Vet trip it is!

Sometimes it is a struggle with veggies.
But I truly believe they can really learn to lov them !

Birds learn so much from their flock, and if solo that's us :)

So making a yummy salad , and a bowl for you and one fir her and eat together.

I find they do better exploring new foods out of cage. I have a flat top. So it's easy to set out a plate or tray with a bunch of stuff, cut up , chunks , shredded and wedges it even while goodies. And ket them come and find in their own . Expect waste ;) don't give up!

Everyone here has heard me say hundred times , that my quaker Penny took 2 years to start eating romaine lettuce!!! Honest to goodness it's one of her favorites now!

They more shape, textures and things you can get her to try , the better and better she will get at trying! Offer a little boiled or scrambled egg, a little tiny amount oatmeal, quinoa. Anything you make that fit you thst is parrot safe give her a taste. My vet says it's ij if you had a little cooked onion or garlic in what you made as long as you try not to give the those pieces.

I start off handing them things I think that most parrot's like . Dint chase good it if comes to get ysy if not just drop on cage top. I offer popcorn, seed, but, crumbs of while grain bread, once they get the idea things I offer are food, I start handing out a pea, a piece of corn, a green bean or dnsp pea, then any veggies.

Stuff veg chunks in cage bar's, if nothing else they can be something to rip up.
Good luck !

Probably sharing a shower or some nice splashy baths or misting would help with nasal plugs of mucus and dust.

Bird beaks also tend to get flakier as they age. A nice rub with a bit of coconut or even tiny bit of olive oil might help it look a bit smoother.

most of my birds have allowed me to scrape or wash off any dried food crud. But the end and edges of Willow’s beak can get flakey. I scrape the loose bits off with my fingernail.

Try organic peppers or organic carrots. I cut them up and eat a piece and offer a separate piece to the parrot. Just add to their bowl if they don't take it immediately. Give them some time with it....

Best of luck!

By the way, has she had a bath yet? There are threads on how to do that to help them enjoy and NOT dread those.

She doesn't seem like she's had much exposure to anything. So anything new is a project.
Even new perches usually take bribery and LOTS of praise.
She likes being misted but is not keen on the shower.
She will take food from me with her feet but immediately throws it. She's a brat for sure.
I just bought her a little hemp(?) Net and am going to try sticking fresh foods in there for her to pull out and tear up.
I'm trying to do new things a little at a time. It was a lot of work getting her to let me pet her and getting her to step up and I'm trying to keep her from regressing.
But I'm open to any tips or experience from other more seasoned companions!

I think a bigger bird like that might enjoy a big washtub or kiddie pool.
My guys just got their Swan bath again. But it would be a little small for an Amazon. Maybe they come in bigger sizes?
That's a great idea! I might run to tractor supply and get some large water bowls to see if she would like that.
Thanks for the idea!!

My two were not used to anything. I'll try to take some pictures tomorrow for you.

Organic whole orange are not that expensive. Start there. I peel mine with a potato peeler. Try a whole hunk and a few shreds.

Not normal nares, they should not be closed. They should have a nice clear opening. A possible nasal flush might need to be done by an Avian Vet.

My Amazons sneeze in the shower, keeps the nares clean and open. Amazons are prone to sinusitis. Rhinolith is a plug in the nares that would need Vet to remove. In the meantime, misting with water may help out.

Attached an image of my RLA for reference of a normal nare.

I mist her daily but the shower is still scary to her.
I'm working on inching her closer to the shower on her stand, but it's a slow process.
Im trying not to do too much too fast. She seems like she's settling in and getting more comfortable with me.
I'm worried introducing her to too much too soon will be an overload and set her back.

Always best to go slow for fear factor.

Has the bird been to an avian vet??

For what it's worth, I also asked the vet to sex mine early in one of their first visits in case later an issue arose (egg binding possible in females).

She has an appt for her nares. She has been sexed.
Unfortunately she was not sexed until I adopted her......so she thinks she's a good boy

I was told Jasper was a boy and I am pretty sure (based on clucking and such) that Jasper is a girl bird.

I don’t plan to breed Jasper but the issues that I was told were not bird issues, why Jasper was rehomed, are actually girl poicephalus issues.

Jasper makes a lot of weird noises but if I’m careful the territoriality is not much of a problem. She’s not a bird I can pass around for pets, though.
