Definitely not surprised about the nose thing! But I am surprised that the purebreds lived longer than the mixes, though their hypothesis seems pretty good as to why

I feel like that makes sense, that the purebreds would live longer than the mixes since ethical breeders try to breed towards a longer life expectancy with better health

But I bet the mutts live longer than the others, and the "designer" dogs are the ones with the shorter lives with purebreds in the middle (Depending on breed).

My mums labrador lived to 14, he was from a family of gundogs. And the family mutt lived to 18.

I just opened the article

“Small dogs with long noses, such as whippets and miniature dachshunds, live for years longer than large flat-faced breeds such as English bulldogs”

well… yeah, lmao. Brachycephalic can’t breathe.

They are slowly being banned across the EU.
I had a french bulldog when I moved to Spain, he didn't make it to his second birthday, died in my arms whille I ran to the vet.

Oh jeez, I’m sorry that happened :sadhug2:

Frenchies seem to be one of the most prone breeds to having just about every major health issue under the sun. Enlarged hearts, hip problems, obviously breathing problems, hydrocephalic, can’t have a little without medical intervention… it’s such a shame because they are really fun little dogs, they just have so many problems.

It kind of makes me wonder about labs. I knew a lab from an ethical breeder that lived 16 + years (I'm not sure when she past). I'd imagine there's a huge disparity in health between ethical breeders and mills/backyard breeders that effects their life span. Because labs is so popular I wonder in the gap is more extreme than other breeds.

I'm so sorry! That's so horribly heartbreaking

Here's an interesting video about aging and a theory why big dogs age faster

My neighbor loves bull dogs , they definitely have a short life :( she got a puppy while mine where also puppies, when it passed (4?) She got a second, when it passed she got a 3rd that has also now passed :(. Meanwhile I still have all of mine , 2 are now 16. I ran into a little while ago and she said never again would she get a bull dog .

My old man Alfie is a pekingese, he is 16 , tho brachycephalic, has never had breathing issues or even snoring when sleeping.

Interesting, my right next to me neighbor has dachshunds , she adopts adults in need of homes . ( all passed before 14, I'm sure their rescue life history playing a role)
Dachshunds in my quick Google are 12-14 yrs average
Pekingese 12-15 yrs average
Pekingese are a breed that has been around a really long time . Perhaps they refined the breed , better than the newer brachycephalic breeds ?

My aunt used to have pekingese, I think both of hers were in the 15-18 age range when they passed!

Brie was a long nose miniature dachshund. Sadly she only lived to 9.5 yrs because she had chronic pancreatitis that frequently had flare ups. Eventually leading to serious pancreatic failure.

The study is overall trends. Any dog can be the unlucky one with chronic health problems, even if they have super star healthy parents. I agree with breeding for health and well-being before aesthetics, but there will always be outliers outside of human control.

I have shared lives with does living into their teens, and tragedies of a dog passing suddenly at three from an unknown heart condition. We never know what we are going to get in terms of time with our doggos. I just treat every second like it is the only second we have together. Dogs are deserving of all the cuddles, good vibes and treats. They are magical.

I would love if the focus of dog breeding was shifted to long healthy lives

Long live the doggo!

I worry about the shift to breeding for color mutations in parrots... especially those chasing money and inbreeding...

Pikachu came from a veterinarian run aviary that focused on healthy color mutation, and makes note they breed back to original color in their lines to maintain health

My friends got a French bulldog can’t even walk longer than 10mins without passing out can’t breath and definitely can’t play with other dogs she made a fortune for her to have a nose job to help her breath only helped a little it’s 18months old vet said she will be lucky to live to three even throwing ball in garden for her she sounds like 100year old who’s smoke 60 a day all their life
It’s sad people breed for looks not health of dog

An interesting article that points out what I feel like most dog people know.

Part of my research into getting a poodle was a dog known for longevity and a square frame (not longer than tall) to help avoid wrist and back issues which seem to be apparent in just about every mix in rescue atm since they are all shih tzu/byb chihuahua mixes around me.

Personally I’ve had one mix breed live to 10, who we lost to oral cancer, our other lived o 16, who we also lost to cancer. I’m hoping my current two live forever, lol. My poodles breeder had 2 retired dams age 17 and 18, who didnt look older than 10.

Working in daycare I saw all manner of mixes and purebreds, from mixes with real twisty wrists that touched when standing, to GSD’s with terrible hips at 4 years old, to our favorite Newfie who was 16 and still kicking (a true miracle)

Remind me, is your poodle a standard or a mini?

Toy! I was originally looking for a mini, but I’m more pleased I ended up with a toy. She’s about 8lbs-ish
I keep contemplating looking at a standard, the breed really ticks all the boxes that I ever look for, but the only problem is is that I really dislike the texture of the hair… is it difficult to care for? I would definitely not do the typical continental cut because I think it looks dumb, and it has such a need for constant trimming. I’d honestly probably doodle my poodle :roflmao:

Ethically bred ones that follow AKC standard are able to breathe. It's such a pity the breed has been taken over by designer breeders and byb breeders that cause issues.
