Let's be perfectly honest, any pet store that sells animals is in it for the money and the money only.
As far as Petco goes they pretty much lost my business after a recent transaction with them online. I purchased enough to have free shipping. Doesn't free shipping mean it comes to you without any tags or tax or tips. They use doordash to deliver the items that I purchased and by the way you are being charged $20 tip for that. I think I will be going to chewy from now on.
No tax? Free shipping or not, you have to pay tax.

I paid the tax, but a 20 dollar tip that was taxed royally ticks me off. I'm more then willing to pay a tip to the driver myself, I don't need the company I'm purchasing from to pay a tip. And when they leave my package outside where a porch pirates can get it. They receive no tip in my world. They had proper notification to how this complex works. I can get a tenant warning for improper package delivery.

I see what youre saying now. Thats like going to a restaurant and the tip is in the bill. I dont go for that either.
If doordash is their only method of delivery, i wouldnt buy there either. They dont do that where i live. Its regular shipping through fedex etc.

Okay, let me know what they say!
Went to Petco today. I asked the manager on duty what they do if a bird (or any animal) in their store becomes ill. She said if the animal becomes ill within a few days of receiving it, it goes back to the vendor to deal with. After that time she said each district has an appointed vet that will come to the store.
I asked if they had an avian vet specifically, she said no, just a general vet that takes care of all animals. She said bigger districts may have avian specific vets. Keep in mind its all rural area around here. Our petcos and petsmarts are small ones. This petco only has a few birds and my local petsmart doesnt carry birds.
I asked her what they did with animals that die in their store. She said petco has very strict protocols. All animals that may die or say someone brings back a dead fish, they are frozen until they can be cremated. Never ever is a body thrown away. She said the only thing they throw in the garbage is dead crickets. IMG_4160.jpeg IMG_4163.jpeg IMG_4164.jpeg IMG_4162.jpeg IMG_4165.jpeg This is where they normally have Conures or Cockatiels.Ive never seen more than 2 in here at a time.

Well that’s good. My Petcos cages are not as clean. The reptiles are not as well cared for as those are. The one thing I am wondering is, don’t pet stores get their birds from breeding mills? I am glad your Petco is good. I am sure mine would throw the animals away. The way they catch the birds and hold them in the box is so mean looking and they don’t seem to care at all.

That is your district, not all Petco's are run in that fashion. Those cages are immaculate in comparison to the ones here. The Petco in my neighborhood, changes managers and employees faster than I change socks and underwear. Managers in my Petco are belligerent snotty none of them old enough to know what the heck they're doing. Budgie cages that have cuttlebones that are turned backwards so the birds don't eat them so fast. Some of the birds that I have seen at my Petco, are sickly sad looking pathetic little babies.
There was one really good employee at my Petco, that knew enough about birds to know what was right what was. I was asked by her to take a cockatiel that came back to the store. To be honest I would have taken it except for two things. It was it was being held in a dark room, like a back room and it was sneezing very badly. I had two birds already I was not about to bring a sick bird into my aviary. I asked for the bird to be taken to a vet and checked over before I would take it. She said and I quote "sorry I can't do that is against policy" unquote. Two days later she was fired. This Petco is a revolving door for employees that never last more than a couple of months.

I understand all Petcos arent the same but that was my point. I didnt want Petco to get a bad wrap over a couple of bad ones.

She should have told you that the vet comes to them. Im sure they have a contract with their vet. For her to “take it to a vet” would most certainly be against their policy.
Sometimes i curse and swear because small towns like mine always have the smaller stores with much less of a selection. On the other hand im glad i live in a small town. My local Petco is an example why.
