I’m trying to compile a list of what to look for in non hand tame birds to determine who may need urgent care before it’s an emergency.

My recent experience with Pistachio has made me realize how much like a detective one must be, constantly searching for subtle clues. I’m sorry he almost certainly suffered for much longer than necessary.

Please help me add to this list! Since the focus is on non hand tame birds, suggestions like weighing the bird are unhelpful.

Here’s my list so far:
  • Sitting lower on perch
  • Change in vocalizations
  • Receiving extra care from flock (though they’re pretty sneaky about that!)
  • Increased drowsiness
In retrospect, the sitting lower on the perch should have been my first clue. What would you add?

Droppings. Changes in droppings is often a first sign or illness.

Drooping wings, lethargy, eyes that lost their sparkle.

Signs as such above are very evident signs it's more critical and needs Vet immediately.

Vomiting food another sign something is off, not usually a critical situation, but needs Vet intervention.
