IMG_8335.jpeg Ok so my birds are extremely hormonal (explains the egg laying) and i peeked in their cage at around 10:00 pm (because i heard seeb noises) to see AN EGG (i’ve had the birds for 2 years now) not even in the food bowl or smth, just out in the open on the cage floor. cracked, open and completely empty on the inside (aside from a bit of clear white substance drooling out of it veerrrrrrry slowly). The birds’ names were Cherry and Melon, and one of them laid an unfertilised egg. That wasn’t even close to good parenting instincts borbies T-T .

Appearance of egg:
Smaller than my thumb, with a very white colour, as white as the clouds. Half of the egg was cracked, and it is completely empty on the inside. A bit of clear white liquid staining the tissue it is currently on right now.

Context:
Peeking in cage at around 10:00 pm to see an egg on the cage floor, presumably laid from the *HEIGHEST* perch.

What I need help with:
-What should I do with the egg?
-Are my birds okay?
-Will they start laying more eggs?
-I assumed both are female because of their colouring, but am I now just coming to the conclusion that one could be male?

Welcome,

Empty, but did you check the drop tray underneath it? Could have spilled out after it cracked. They could have also eaten the contents if it broke.

-What should I do with the egg?
I usually leave cracked eggs until I am sure they know it broke. Birds aren't stupid, they know they laid an egg, so removing it quick in the hopes they didn't know won't help. It is likely she will re lay another egg to make up for the broken one.
edit to add; 20 minutes or so usually gives enough time to go back and see it. Remember to disinfect the area where the egg broke.
anothe edit; i have read some folks using egg shells in the garden, so if you do, you can use it. Or put it on the compost heap. Or bin it.

-Will they start laying more eggs?
It is likely, usually you get a handful of eggs per clutch, laid 24-48 hours apart (closer to 48hours). Be on the lookout for another egg the day after tomorrow.

-I assumed both are female because of their colouring, but am I now just coming to the conclusion that one could be male?
Maybe you could post a couple of photos (front and back) and see if any members here can sex them for you :)

-Are my birds okay?
I cannot see them so I can't answer that. Things to look out for are loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, loss of strength, any other odd behaviour.
