Urgent EmerAid IC Carnivore for parakeet?

Hi, I have a question for my 3 year old parakeet Misty. He had some breathing problems and had to stay in hospital for 3 nights. When we picked him up, he had improved but still very weak. The vet prescribed some EmerAid diet for him, and instructed us to mix with apple sauce to feed him four times a day.

When we got home and looked at the package, it shows “EmerAid Intensive Care Carnivore”. We looked up EmerAid’s website, and found that parrots and other companion birds should use the EmerAid IC Omnivore. And the Carnivore type is used for birds of prey only.

We called their office and they said that’s what they use to treat all kinds of birds. So we are a bit confused as what should we do.

I compared the ingredients of Omnivore and Carnivore. They are very similar but the Carnivore type has much higher percentage of protein and oil. So we may be ok to use the Carnivore type to feed the parakeet, as this only a supplement to the regular diet.

Any input would be welcome. Thanks

The type my vet has always prescribed has been the "Omnivore", and I mixed it with warm water.
Is your vet an avian vet? Maybe they only have the Carnivore on hand to give out?
I'm really not sure what to say if you are thinking it might not be the best for your bird. He needs some help, so check again with the vet to be sure it wasn't an accident that you got the wrong package and then use it I guess.
I'd worry about getting too much protein and being hard on kidneys but maybe if it is only a supplement??? Ask the vet that too.
Best of luck with Misty and I hope he improves soon.

Thanks. We will call them up again and ask about it. It is one hour driving otherwise we would just go straight there.

Got called back from the vet. They said they gave Misty the higher protein Carnivore diet so that he can gain some weight as he is slightly under weight and “failed to thrive”. I guess that’s fine then as it was not an oversight.
