Hello,

I was hoping to inquire what everyone’s experience with conure gender vs. human gender preference was.

I have always read that if you are a male (which I am) then it’s best to find a female bird?
How true is this?

My new conure is of an unknown gender but my first conure was a female. She was the best bird ever and we had an amazing time together.

You know I have heard this before from a few people and one breeder. I have no idea if any studies have been done on this gender preference. Perhaps a few male members with female birds can chime in here.

Do you guys think it is an old wives tale?

more of: whom ever works with the bird gets more love?
No that's not always true either. I am the only one that does anything with the birds and my first one was totally enamored with my husband who basically ignored them

My Sam Axe, ~25 year old male scarlet, is fine with anyone who is not an older lady, and he’s wary of them until they’ve given him a treat. He doesn’t seem to feel either way about men.
Sir Tibington, ~1.5 years old male Jenday, is pretty chill but I am his person. He’ll fly to my boyfriend and if you’ve got food he’ll be your best friend.
Both of them prefer me to anyone but they don’t seem to show gender preferences.
I had both pick me so I didn’t go out looking for male birds. Originally, Tibs’ favorite person was a girl from the shop but last time we went he wanted nothing to do with her and actively flew away. But he stepped up for a man.

Yep... sounds familiar:unsure1: Hickey LOVES hubby and is pretty much take it or leave it with me. And I do EVERYTHING too- you’d at least think being the food giver would earn some points. RIGHT!??
So regarding your question OP- we have a male Nanday conure who loves his male human. However, he is a 20+ year old rescue, so I’ve been wondering if he had a negative experience with a female in his past (or maybe is just used to males). I do have clickers coming tomorrow though, I’m hopeful that him and I will bond over some training ;)

My first two conures were/are males. I can't say my first (cherry head, RIP) had a preference for gender at all... but he wasn't "normal" for a conure, either.

My second (mitred), supposedly preferred men. His breeder is a female, but he lived with a man for 10 years of his life. I have not noticed any preferences to gender at all - he just doesn't like strangers!

My third (red throat, RIP) was female and also preferred females... specifically, older, grandmotherly type women. (I'm not old enough to fit that description! but she still bonded with me)

Fifth (green cheek) I can't say he has any preferences either.... I mean, he's wary of people as is, but he'll "work" for food!

My green cheek conure is a male, and he was hand raised by females. He prefers me over my boyfriend, and I think he prefers females overall.

Another one of those old world myths that doesn’t hold a drop of water. Relationships between birds and humans has nothing to do with gender. It’s about the relationship. You build it and it will be.

My GCC, Zazu is female and loves me most.. I’m not sure how much help I am but she really doesn’t like anyone but me.. make it female or male. if they come too close or try to pet her she lunges. Maybe I didn’t properly socialize her but I’m fine with it. I don’t have many people over. I think Zazus 2nd favorite is Angel, my 5 month old Ragdoll that I have to keep away. They love each other but are so bad together.

Hi , I am a female and my conure gender is unknown but I have noticed that my bird only goes to males and fight with other female birds . I hand fed my bird since a baby but yet my baby conure prefers males over me. I have nine birds 4 cockatiels , two English budgies , and two parakeets, which each pair has laid some eggs . I’m so sad I just want a baby bird to want only me .

This is an older thread so you may not get any interaction here. Feel free to post your own thread :)

Without knowing more about the situation it's hard to answer this.

Could your conure be saying "NO! Leave me be!" or maybe your conure is guarding something? Or it could be an anxious response or a startle response.
