We are planning a trip to the Smokey Mountains in a few months & will have to take Ivy with me. Qp are illegal in Tennessee. Does anyone know the rules for visiting? If she can't go we will simply cancel the trip. If I can't bring my baby then they don't deserve my money!

I don't know about Tennessee, but I'd be extremely cautious. Here in PA, ALL Quakers are seized and immediately killed...no ifs, ands, or buts...:(

Same thought, be extremely careful, some states you can't even drive through with a Quaker.

I plan on calling the Tennessee visitors center to see if I can get more information. They will not be open until Tuesday,(which is the last day I can cancel & get a refund) If not, maybe they can advise me on who to speak with. There is no way I would take her & risk her being taken from me. That would be a bad day for everyone involved!!

In Tennessee, I believe that it is the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency that is in charge of this.

Definitely a good idea to call around and see what the specific rules are. With some states (except for PA - I don't know what their problem is) there seems to wiggle room for quakers from other states. I think one state requires them to be banded, I forget which one. I know Georgia has a drive through only rule - I believe you can bring a quaker in the state for 24 hours or something like that. Let us know what you found out!

I have been on the phone all day with everyone from the Visitors Bureau, misc hotels to several different police depts. No one knew Quaker Parrots were illegal. I spoke to quite a few shocked & confused state employees! I'm beginning to wonder how they can enforce a law no one knows about? I have left messages with three different people at the Wildlife Resource Agency & am still waiting for a return call. I will update when I find out more info!

I guess the legality is a secret. I looked online and saw a lot of Quaker breeders in Tn.

That's concerning. Selective enforcement of the law isn't a good thing.

Who knows what PA's problem is. Half the Game Commission officers don't even know what a Quaker looks like. I was accused of "harboring" a QP some years ago...Titan the IRN.

I guess they went by the fact that Titan's green - by that description alone, half the parrots we see would be considered QPs. Ergo the gray fronted conure or parakeet ... now if we could figure out how to put a crest on a QP that would requalify them as a cockatoo ....

I didn't want to say anything but the Visitors Bureau people are nice and friendly and can tell you where to go (as in visit) but all you'll get are confused answers from most people you ask. The risk is of running into that one state employee who can identify a QP. Murphy's law has a tendency to kick in at any time and the biggest giveaway (for me) about QP are their voice and sound.

Like I said, the Game Commission people are a "little" uninformed. A few years ago, after a anonymous complaint was filed, the GC -in full uniform- came pounding on my door, and said I was "harboring" illegal exotic bird(s). At the time, we had two tiels, a couple budgies, and Titan. They didn't know what species Titan was, and had to get a book out to determine that he WAS an IRN.
This is why I'm so very careful posting pictures, giving information about our birds, etc, on the internet. Too many people out there have too much time on their hands, and love to cause trouble....

Based on the information (or lack of info) you have found out so far I wouldn't risk it. If they are so uninformed then it just doesn't seem like it would be safe. One person might tell you it's OK for a short stay and then someone might stop you and tell you that it's illegal and want to confiscate Ivy. Better to be safe than sorry. JMHO

I found this:
"Before leaving on an interstate driving trip, Brosell recommends you contact the state veterinarians for the states you will be visiting, to see if there are any restrictions for people traveling through with pet birds. Most likely all that you will need is an interstate veterinary health certificate (you can get this from any licensed veterinarian, who will need to examine your bird no more than 10 days before your departure). It’s important to have this. Some states do have border checks on the highway between states and may request to see such documentation for any animals in your vehicle."
This is from: Birds & The Law

That's horrible! I would have been terrified. Thank goodness that they were able to understand that Titan was not a quaker.
