Toys for Aracaris?

Are all of the regular bird toys safe for Aracaris? In particular, the pinata toys that are made by Planet Pleasures. Is it okay for birds to bite or chew on those?

The little boy bird is doing much better. His tail feathers are even starting to grow back (he only had 1 feather on his little tail!) and his feathers are getting smooth and glossy.

Hi Lore, I am SO happy to hear he is doing better.
The pinatas, do you mean the ones shaped like animals? Or do you mean the ones that are round and made of natural fibers?

Ok...make a deal, you name him, and I will go through a couple sites and show you some things he would like.:D

Hi, Carole, it's good to hear from you.

The Pinatas I mean are the ones that look like they are woven out of natural fibers, some are off white and some are purplish red, it has little woven boxes on it and also stiff thin bits like threads. The packaging said Made in the Phillipines, and it said it was safe but it seems like Aracaris are so different from parrots. I put the toy into his cage and he seemed really interested in it but I was worried so I took it out of the cage when I had to leave for work (aren't I a mean mommy?).

I still can't decide on the name - I am deciding between Isaac (God laughed) and Alcyon (the kingfisher in the Pogo cartoon who looks a lot like an Aracari).

He is really funny - he doesn't want to come onto my hand in the daytime but in the evening he will fly out of his cage to land at my feet. I pick him up then and he climbs right up to my shoulder an snuggles under my hair and goes to sleep. Then he doesn't want to leave my shoulder to go to bed. He still doesn't use the tent I made for him or the one I bought from Annrose (I thought he might prefer the one with the soft fleece inside!). Instead, he sits on his perch in the back corner.

We are waiting for some new perches and new toys - he is fun to buy for, like having a grandchild!

Oh he sounds so sweet. I find they love little toys that we call 'foot toys', little cat balls that light up{find at petco or petsmart} and things that jingle, tinkle, or make noise. They do not really "chew" toys, but rather they beat on them, beat them against things, or carry them around.

If you look through some of the other threads in this part of the forum, like pico's eh cage, you can see how I have his cage set up, and some of his toys.

Mindo does not chew or preen toys like a parrot. Instead, he likes to yank on them and bang them on things. His favorite toy is this:

Amazon.com: JW Pet Company Activitoys Hol-ee Roller Bird Toy: Pet Supplies

It is rubber, which he likes the feel of, easy to grab with his beak, and the bell rings when he shakes the toy.

He also loves anything with a bell at the bottom, but we have to be careful, because a bell or clacker could easily become a choking hazard if he separates it from the toy. He always check the construction of small parts. If they can easily be removed by our hands or with a set of pliers. then we assume he can eventually get them loose.

On the diy front, Mindo loves bendy straws. Sometimes we will just give him straws to play with, other times, we will insert them into a plastic chain and hang them in his cage. He loves to bite them, carry them around, and bang them on things.

The most random "toy" we've given him is a an astroturf doormat outside of this cage.

Amazon.com: Grassworx 10366285 Door Mat: Patio, Lawn & Garden

While he tries to eat around his pellets in his food bowl, he loves to perch on the edge of his mat and forage for the pellets that we sprinkle over it.

Hol-ee Roller ,
Dog versions are incredibly popular with macaws..

I didn't even know they made a bird version,

Kumiko likes smaller translucent green one with the braid of rope through it better than the standardized rubber one. She uses the green one to play catch. The green one is called tug and treat ball.

I've even got video of a green wing macaw with one :)

As for other toy recommendations, toucans seem to like stealing pens and hopping on the cash register to make noises (one of the local bird stores has a small toucan loose on the counter on the days the employee who owns it works there :)
