I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post as my question is dual topic. It is a genetics and breeding question but specificaly related to conures so please accept my apologies if it is miscategorized.

I am interested in learning about this mutation of green cheek. I have a friend who breeds green cheeks and she has offered me an unrelated pair of green cheeks to start me off breeding these great birds.

The first baby is hatched and not yet feathered so it's like Christmas, lol. He/she has a white beak, feet and toe nails. One parent is visual tourquoise the other is split tourquoise. Because it is such a new mutation I am having a hard time finding the info on genetics.

I am wondering if any one else on this forum breeds this mutation and can guide me in the right direction?

Thank you!

Which parent is visual and which parent is split?

Here is the Genetic calculator I use

Genetic Calculator 1.3 Green-cheeked Conure

from the looks of it , it doesn't matter which parent carries it if both carry it then you get half normal green split Turquoise, half Visual

If only one parent carries it all babies are split for it

So it seems to be a Recessive gene meaning both parents would need the gene for it to be visual on any babies

I think, but am not sure, the male is visual. Of the 5 babie 3 have rhe light beaks, feet and nails. Thank you for that link! Do you breed the tourquoise? I am really interested in this mutation and learning more about it!
Thanks!

your welcome

No I don't I've looked at them, and Used the calculator I did it 1st time as dad visual, mom split, then 2nd time was mom visual dad Split - It came out the way before both of those ways

next one I did just dad visual and no split on the mom - So that told me it was Recessive, both parents need to carry it to get any visuals. If only one parent carries it it gets carried on to males and females as a Split

If I am understanding this correct then, it is similiar to the pearl gene in cockatiels?

And quite possibly my baby is a visual? I can't wait until it feathers! I am very excited and very lucky!

no its more like the Pied Gene in cockatiels

Pearl is sex linked - So to get visual the dad has to carry it OR both mom and dad have it

with the Turquoise it doesn't seem to make a difference if just mom or just dad has it you won't get visuals if only one parent carries it. Just like the pied gene in Tiel's - both parents must carry it to get visuals

but I would say yours is visual because all the baby pics i've seen of normal GCC they're not light beaked/feet

P.s. if you look at the bottom of the Calculator it tells you what some of the Abbreviation are for that are beside some of the mutations
The following 2 are both beside the Turquoise so that means it is a recessive gene and both parents must carry the gene either one visual, one split, both visual, both split - how ever it may be but both parents must carry the gene for any babies to be visual.
javascript:pop("../html/mut_eng.html#re",395,440);
re - Autosomal Recessive,
cd - Co-Dominant,

I get it now, I hope:lol:. My understanding is that only the pineapple, cinnamon and tourquoises mutations have the light beak, feet and nails. However I only have a normal and they have the black beak and feet. I have only seen pictures of the others. I am hoping to pair this baby up with another split tourquoise visual cinnamon or pineapple. That baby just hasn't been born yet, lol.

Thank you for helping me understand Atv, genetics is fascinating but can get very confusing. I am thankful for people like you willing to break it down for me!:hug8:

Your welcome

I was surprised i caught on to it that quick , because it took me for ever to get the hang of budgie and tiel mutations and i still don't get lovebird mutations all the way lol

I pretty much have the tiel mutations down, budgie's are outta my league and lovies I am still working on. I guess it's because my breeding focus has been on the tiels I really worked at learning the information and have set a goal as to what I want to produce.

I love budgies but have no interest in breeding them. The green cheeks are another that I was researching and won out over Black caps for the time being. Lol!
