Well, after literal years of waiting, I was able to open my home to a little poodle back in May.

Cinder is now nearly 7 months old and maybe 6ish lbs, a phantom toy poodle. She’s been a doll and I love her to bits!

She's beautiful. Poodles are amazing dogs. Super intelligent, fun loving & make great companions.

I bred, raised & groomed toy poodles for the last 50 years. My current poodle "Shirkan" is a silver male. Here he is:

What a beautiful boy! Cinder’s breeder also had mainly silvers. Her dam was silver and sire was red.

Oh man :loveshower:

Poodles are a breed I keep thinking about looking into. They meet nearly all my wants in a breed, I'm just still iffy because of the weird fur texture.

Their fur is basically soft & can be slightly curly or heavy curls. The downside to poodles is they don't have fur, they have hair, like us. It never stops growing, so frequent clips/groom is required. They do not shed, but lose hair like we do.

Curly hair is nice, not weird!

I just don’t know that I’d like a bearded dog, though you can shave their muzzles.

Cinder is my first poodle and my first purebred dog. While her coat hasn’t changed yet, I don’t find poodle hair to be too strange of a texture, especially when it’s well conditioned, but as someone with a terrier I may be biased.

She has been everything I wanted in a dog, smart, super affectionate, gets along with all the home creatures and matches my energy. Ready to go when we go out and then ready to chill on the couch when we get back.

I will say the grooming is more than our terrier, but I knew this going into it and already home groom our terrier and have the gear for it. She gets brushed daily with a slicker and brushing spray and gets weekly bath and blow dry/. I keep her face and feet shaved as I like the poodle look, this is done every 3 weeks or so.

I have her in a Miami cut currently (short bod, longer topknot, ears, tail and Pom poms) but I’m growing that out currently with the goal of getting into a modified continental (shorter topknot and no rosettes). But I may just re-do the Miami before she gets spayed for easier maintenance.

@SunnySandi there is a product I have used for many years called "The Stuff". It's sold on many sites. It's a silicon conditioner detangler you leave in. I find it best to spray on right after a bath, while still wet, & rub/brush in before drying. I by the concentrate, dilute it according to instructions, & use a super fine mist bottle to apply. Never dry brush poodle hair. If you don't have a brushing spray on hand water in a fine mist sprayer will work in a pinch. I'd also suggest you use a good rinse out conditioner when bathing to keep the hair & skin well conditioned. I also really like these detangler combs with rotating teeth: Small 5" Pet Comb with rotating teeth, untangles mats with ease! King Charles Cavalier favorite comb! (T516PC) - UNTANGLER Products

@Toy Thank you for the suggestions! I was on the fence about the Stuff as I wasn’t sure if it would leave any residue on her coat. I had went to a local show and a breeder there recommended Espana Biosilk detangling spray, so that’s what I’ve got on hand, it seems to work quite well and smells good! But I’m always up for new products.

I don’t have a dedicated conditioner yet, but am using a conditioning shampoo which I’m hoping will buy me time before coat change haha. That’s one super neat comb too  Rn I’ve got an Artero super soft slicker and basic wide tooth metal comb. Thankfully I’ve not had any tangles or mats yet, but I know my time is coming lol Her longest fur is only about 2-3in now so maintaining has been going smoothly, especially now that she’s not 3in all over :dead:

@SunnySandi Don't you just love a poodles facial expressions? Shirkan rolls his eyes, showing the whites, without turning his head, like he's giving me that "OK Mom" look. It's so funny. I had one female that would curl her lips & smile. I had 8 adults at one time. Try sleeping in the same bed with 8 toy poodles & a spouse, LOL. In was the sardine in the middle!

Shirkan has very thick hair. I like him fluffy, so his jacket often gets to about 8 inches long or more. He often looks like a sheep that needs sheared, LOL. If he gets matted it can take me 3 days of brushing, for hours, to get all the mats out. He just lays in my lap & lets me brush away. From day one he acted like he'd been trained to stand/lay/turn/sit/etc. for grooming, but he hadn't been trained. When I go to do his top knot he lays facing me & just lays still until I'm done. On the grooming table I roll up a towel & tuck it under his chin. I often put 4-5 small ponytails in his top knot & then band them all together.

The detangler spray you got is also a good one. There are many products out there specifically made for poodles. This site has a lot of them: Cherrybrook - Show Dog, Grooming and Pet Supplies

Grooming bands (many colors & sizes), wraps, rat tail combs, etc.: https://www.laineeltd.com/cgi-bin/laineeltd/index2

The choice of slicker brushes varies. I had one I bought over 45 years ago, that finally wore out. I used that same brush on all the poodles I groomed back then. Trying to find one to replace it wasn't easy, as many companies have gone out of business over the years. New products aren't always the best compared to older versions. A good slicker brush will glide thru the hair & not grab it or get get stuck in it. I'm guessing you know "line brushing" using a slicker brush.

When I'd sell a puppy I'd tell people to gently rub their feet, face, ears, tail, put their fingers in their mouth & rub across their teeth, etc. This gets them used to being touched all over & will allow less issues when grooming & with vet checks. I can grab Shirkan's canine teeth & he just holds his mouth open for me. It's a game we play I call "get your teffies". I descale my dogs teeth myself. I found dental tools that work great for tiny poodle teeth at a flea market many years ago. I recently broke the tip off one & can not find a replacement. So I'd suggest if you find a tool/brush/comb/etc. you really like I'd suggest you buy a 2nd one & put it away for future use.

@Toy Yes! I love their expressions, sometimes she just looks at me like “What do you want from me? Are you done?” And it kills me lol

These three are some of my favorites

We’re working on getting better with grooming, she’s perfect for clean feet and nails and sani. But she really doesn’t like her face being clipped, mainly the bridge of her nose, so we’re just working on desensitizing that. Her breeder did a really good job getting her used to the blow dryer and she came clipped.

She disliked brushing until I got the Artero brush, I had an older slicker I inherited but I think it was too rough for puppy skin, the cat loves it though! But now she just lays on her side and let’s me line brush as I drop tidbits into her mouth lol

She’s good with her mouth being touched, I haven’t started brushing her teeth yet, but will soon now that she has adult teeth. I use a toddler toothbrush for our terrier so we’ll see how that works for her little mouth. She’s on the upper end in size for a toy I believe, prob around 7-8lbs now and about 7 months. But that’s what I wanted, her dam was also an inch oversize in height.

Shirkan is absolutely gorgeous how old he? I can’t imagine having 8 as my plus Cinder is already a full queen size lmao

@SunnySandi Love the smile pic & yep that's the eye roll they do.

They make toothbrushes for dogs. I have one that is double ended. The toothpaste comes in different flavors, chicken, etc.. I never used it tho, just water or Nolvadent liquid. I mostly just descaled teeth when grooming.

Shirkan is 8 years old. He is also a slightly oversized toy. My oldest poodle lived to age 17. He was all of 4 pounds, 8 inches at shoulder. Most of the "8" I had back then were small/undersized toys, some would consider teacup. My smallest male maxed at 3 pounds, 7 inches high. The oldest poodle I ever groomed was age 20.

We had all 8 in a full size bed, so yeah like I said I was the sardine, with one on my pillow. The largest dog was 6 pounds back then. We took our full antique high back bed frame & made it a queen size, so there would be more room for us & the dogs. I also placed a old hassock at the one end/side of the bed so they could get up/down & not get injured.

@Toy It sounds very eventful haha. Cinder has stairs to the bed and the couch. Albeit those existed prior to Cinder lol. My geriatric cat is rapidly approaching 16 next month and her springs aren’t as good as they used to be.

I hope to have Cinder 17 years or more, the only downside to four legged friends is their lifespan.

Your pups sound like they were just itty bitty! Goodness they must have been adorable <3 Cinder’s breeder had a 14 and 16 year old pair that looked very small in comparison to her other pups which could just be age as everything seems to shrink, and yet they didn’t look a day over 7. It’s truly amazing with these little guys.

Do you have any photos from when you were/are actively showing? I love seeing them all dolled up with their accolades lol

@SunnySandi I never shown. There was nothing in my area & I couldn't travel. I just liked the show clip, but not the hip rosettes, so I didn't do those.

I don’t really care for the rosettes either. But I was feeling squirrelly today and as it’s grooming day, I gave a mod continental a shot. I don’t think it went too bad, I didn’t go as short as I think I should have, but I like her a little fluffy.

@SunnySandi You did good. She's beautiful. I use a #10 blade to shave. I don't like to go closer as it's too easy to cause razor burn. Show people use a #15 or #30 to shave. Vets use a #40, which is really close.
