The Argument With My Mom

Me and my mom disagree all the time, I wanted Cosmo to roam free in my room for the future, my mom wants to keep him in the cage and only let him downstairs for only sometimes which is not enough hours, it’s usually only in the morning and at night. I was fixing my room for him to have space and my mom wanted to put stuff back there where it was. What do you guys think?

Oof, this is a hard one.

Mom is the primary homeowner/renter, and if you're underage, likely has final say. So no good to go against her. What agreements were in place before you got Cosmo? Did y'all discuss the ins and outs of who the primary caretaker is, and stuff like cage time vs roam time? Where was it agreed the cage would be kept?

My mom agree to have Cosmo if I kept him in the cage whenever she says for him to be in the cage. Because my mom said when she had a bird back then they would be in small cages, would have a blanket for him to cover himself like a cozy corner or something like that whenever he is cold. And she wanted him to be taken out without getting his trust to just randomly get him out instead of going at his pace. And luckily I was able to get him a big cage, because if it wasn’t for me to talk to the employee about what cage is for a Quaker he was gonna be in a smaller one.

I think that is fair.
The rest of the out of cage time can be spent with you inside your room with the door closed :)

An uncaged bird 100% of the time is a bad idea, especially when they live where you sleep. (Can easily be hurt or killed).

Any bird kept in a cage full time will not be healthy. Moms are not always right. There should be articles on line about the exercise birds need. Ask her to read them. Have her call your vet also to ask questions.

Here are three reasons why keeping birds in cages can be harmful:

  • Lack of socialization leads to loneliness.
  • Birds have limited space to fly around which causes them stress.
  • Caged birds cannot perform natural activities like foraging.

While I agree with everything you have written. I think perhaps you misread the original post?
OP said mum was ok letting the bird out downstairs to fly in the house twice a day. Never specifically said the bird has to be caged at all times.

@Cosmobird please could you clarify for us?

He is out twice, but don’t they need to be let out 4 hours a day at least though? I read another person told me they need to be let out more so I tried to fix my room for him to be able to fly more.

That’s exactly what I was saying, they need to be able to roam around freely, we have an appointment already for December 1st with an avian vet set up. I’m hoping he will talk some sense into her.

So you are allowed to let your bird fly inside your room whenever? Or not?
There is a difference in flying in your room and flying in the house where the rest of your family is.

How much time does he typically get outside of his cage?

If I have understood your original post correctly you would like your bird to live in your room outside of the cage but your mum wont allow that, she will allow your bird to have out of cage time but not live full time out of the cage in your room- if this is the situation then I have to say I agree with your mum... a bedroom is not a safe place (for either of you really) for your bird to live uncaged as you likely have many many things in your room that your bird could be harmed or killed by... power cords and points, materials, many many hiding areas which can cause all kinds of issues, many people have aerosols, perfumes, make ups, batteries, nick knacks that may be unsafe, textas etc. most bedrooms are not a suitable place for a bird and birds being in your sleeping area is not ideal for your breathing health.

Either way- you mum likely pays for all bills including vet bills so I really think this is a matter you are best to discuss with her without pushing that she is wrong or unfair- she will have to weigh up what is best (as far as she understands) for you all and also what is a risk or unhealthy situation.

No bird left to roam free in a human environment is really very safe unless the human lives in a very odd way...

It’s in the house, but only at certain times for a certain amount of minutes per day.

AND the human. You could easily roll over onto your bird as they come in to snuggle. We've read that sad story a few times on here :(

Oh, Your bird is housed in the house and not in your room? Ok. So what about if you took your bird into your bedroom for some extra out of cage time on top of that out of cage time in the house that your mum allows?

He is out twice a day usually. For certain minutes.
And so you want him to fly free in your room 24/7, including during the night? Or just during the day?
I just want to clarify as I want to make sure to give you the proper advice.

I don’t wear perfume luckily, so that parts gone, makeup I don’t usually wear either only for events. Power cords I can see why it can be bad though in a way, especially wires. Maybe the room isn’t a good idea. But it’s a shame it’s many hours in the cage and barely enough hours. I can see if I convince my mom to let him out more if not at least.

I was just going to suggest this as well.
Do you think your mom would be okay with that? Then you could supervise him, and he could have some extra time to exercise.

As long as he has plenty of things within reason to keep him busy and enrich his life being inside shouldn't be horrible. You can let him out in your room and bring him downstairs when mom says it's OK. As long as he gets time to hang out with you outside his cage he'll adjust and be fine.
Dobby has learned that we work and he's allowed out in the evening when we are settled and not running in and out of the house. We lost Lurch because we would leave him out and sister came home and checked to see that he was sleeping top of his cage. She ran out to grab the groceries and he woke up and went to see who was home and flew out the open door. After that when we got Dobby the protocol changed so not out till it's safe. If you have dogs or cats another reason to be very careful about out time because prey drive is strong with them.

Well doesn’t have to be 24/7 but at least whatever time is needed for him to be happy and fly.
