I've looked and can't find the answer...
What does it mean to you when you get a notice someone is following you?
What do they get out of it?
Can this feature be deactivated? It is creepy.

On the homepage, the people we "follow" are shown above the online members.

I find it helpful when tagging folks in urgent threads.

I "follow" April so her little avatar appears above all the other names,

In the privacy settings, you can also have your profile set so that only the people you follow can see it. So if you "follow" your friends, then set the account privacy to "people I follow", then only they can see anything on there. Other members will not see it.

I think it’s used for keeping track of those you want to keep up with. Maybe they have the same kind of parrot with similar issues, or you just like them as a person. Then you can follow them so you don’t lose track.

OK, so it's not like any time you post something, they get a message you posted something?

Interesting!
But I need a definition...on the page you linked - what are "identities"

No.
It is handy to follow your friends or people you tag a lot or interact a lot with.

I think though, that even those that "follow" you, cannot see if you are online if you have that set to private.
So for anyone with their privacy settings hiding when you're online, strangers who "follow" you will not see that still.
