Hooray!

As you can see, it’s got a couple spots. Because the rust spots don’t appear to be incredibly huge, would I be able to take just a little bit of sandpaper to it, Do you think? Or is this going to still be a situation where I need to rent a sandblaster and hit the whole thing?

It’s freaking massive! Isadora’s previous owners brought it to me so they didn’t have to move states with it.

If you remove any more paint while removing rust you will need to replace the paint or protect the metal from further rust (which you will need to do anyhow) which is where the problem with trying to fix up rusting cages comes in. You obviously need the paint to adhere well to any existing paint and also be bird safe as in non chip-able.

I personally would oil up the rust spots and cover them with large slabs of wood or something if the cage absolutely has to be used.

To fix it properly I believe you really would need to strip the whole thing back then re powder coat which is not a cheap thing to do.

Wowza! Talk about a win if you can get it safe to use.

It was… interesting lol. I think I figured out the reason that Isadora was barbering so bad at their house. Previous owner would pet her all over her entire body, including under her wings and over the preening gland

Hmm. I’d hate to throw the whole thing out, it’s a really heavy duty cage. I’m going to try to put it together this weekend and see if any of the rust is on the inside of the cage. From what I can tell most of it looks to be on the outside of the cage. Thankfully, it’s not absolutely necessary to use right off the bat, but is certainly handy to have around.

Cover the rusty areas with pine boards which will take a bit of time for her to chew through. I had to do that with a spot on Burts last cage and it worked perfectly!

@webchirp has had cages re-powder coated before. I am not sure if there was any prep work she had to do beforehand?

That would definitely be confusing and sexy frustrating. Some people just don't know any better. They have been very kind and generous to you tho

They really have been, and I just don’t think that she really knew any better. But it does at least give me the answer as to why it had been so bad previously, and why I’m still working through the habit of it.

Nothing on my end except removing hardware and wheels. I just took them in or a panel here and there. They sandblasted the cage or panel and painted with food grade powder coating.
