Hello! I want to have the downstairs of my house painted. Our cockatiel is upstairs in my son's room. Can I use a regular paint like Sherwin Williams? Is there a safe paint for birds? Thank you.

you will want to get a paint that specifically states it is low-VOC or zero-VOC . VOC=Volatile Organic Carbons
To be safest, you should still isolate your cockatiel with a closed door at minimum until the paint has dried and you no longer detect any odor.

I painted a room in my house just last week.

You definitely want the 99% VOC free paint (I am in Aus, we used Haymes brand paint)- I am actually extremely amazed at just how little it smelled and how fast the air was back to being no smell at all. Felt kinda silly for spending so much time setting up fans and barriers to stop the fumes getting into my birds room- last time I painted (approx 6-7 years ago) I recall the paint fumes being so overwhelming and hanging around for ages as well as penetrating every room of the house.
