Oldest Lilac-crowned Amazon?

I've had an LCA for over 30 years. An older relative purchased the bird from it's previous owner, and when he and his wife passed away, I inherited it by default. Our LCA is at least 46 years old, and we are pretty sure that he was caught in the wild.

When our relative purchased the LCA, I'm sure he had no idea the bird would outlive him by decades. I've searched online about lifespan but have found widely varying information. Our vet hasn't been really helpful, but has said life expectancy reported online is 'overdone', meaning it's often less than what is estimated. She thought he would be gone a year ago but he's still going strong.

Does anyone know of an LCA that has lived past the ripe old age of 46?

I have a blue front male that was wild caught (per vets and others, band since removed).

I found a picture of Secret from the 70's, I think 78??

Thank you for your reply. We estimate our bird was hatched in 1978 but no idea. As far as I know, he was never banded. Guess these Lilacs live a long time. Our vet said he was one of the oldest birds of any type that she sees.

i know there is some data online, but honestly we never had such tech to document domesticated Amazons. i know some have said DYHA live 50 to 60 years, well i met one that was 95 years old and still going! previously we didn't have resources to help guide us on their diets, or well being or have vets readily available. Today, i wouldn't be surprised to see our Amazons live well past their expected life cycle. I have all my birds in my will...and i do my best to make sure they aren't one person birds, as i would want them to live a long happy life.

sounds like your Amazon is living a long healthy lifestyle, and its awesome you were receptive to care for the bird for as long as you have. Its amazing.

I don't know about LCAs. I have a Panama who is at least 58 years old. Where I live in Jersey, Channel Islands, there was a Blue-Fronted Amazon called Sim who died age 71 nearly 3 years ago.

Thanks for your input and kind words. 95 is a long time! Unfortunately I'm not sure who would take our LCA if he lived longer than we did. As you know parrots are a big commitment ;-). I really like your point of trying to make sure your birds aren't one person birds. That is not an easy task

Wow! Another senior Amazon! Was Slim domestic or living in the wild? It seems like they live longer, if well cared for, in a home, rather than in the wild, due to predators and illness I'd guess. 58 is also amazing!

Sim lived in a toy store and then a school.

Agree with you that captive parrots live much longer. Chico suffers from bad arthritis and is blind.
