New rainbow lorikeet HELP!

I have a new rainbow lorikeet that I got from a breeder near me. He’s not afraid of hands, and will step up sometimes, but he immediately wants to be put down once he steps up. He isn’t afraid of my presence, but he won’t play with me at all. He will eat nectar from my finger, as long as he’s on a perch while eating. He isn’t afraid of humans, but he doesn’t want to be held. He doesn’t really like my cockatiel, but that’s the least of my concerns since they arent caged together. What do I do?

How long have you had this bird?
Can take a long time to train them to be ok with things that go against their natural safety responses or even to accept that we are not a danger to them.

I have three birds and none of them are afraid of hands but none of them like to be held/restrained either.
My macaw loves to perch on me and hang off my body any place he can hang on but he is not a fan of being held with my hands around him- if I go to grab him he will tolerate it for a short time if I ask him to but if I push my luck he will most certainly bite me good and proper.
My cockatoo would love to perch on me- so he can bite me (so he is not allowed on me lol) but he is not real happy when he gets towelled for check overs and grumps about it the whole time.
My poor budgie hates being held or accidentally landing on people skin with and will nearly breathe himself into a fit when grabbed- he will kinda sit on my hand every now and then for a short time but I really must not move at all.

All birds are different with what they like and don't like and what they will and won't allow. You will need to learn some patience and also some training techniques to encourage your bird to accept your hands and to want to sit on them- always remember that what you want is not always going to be what your bird wants and always try to remember that you want your bird to associate your hands with positive things- maybe you can feed him some of the nectar from a small bowl you hold (or straight off your skin) while you have a short perch in your hand for him to stand on and slowly make the perch less and less till he is basically stood on your hand. Many things are a matter of time, consistency, patience, and tonnes of rewards.

I’ve only had him for two days. You’re right, I’ll work daily with him and feed him nectar and other fruits from my hand daily. He doesn’t seem scared, he just doesn’t want to be on me when he’s able to have another area too. He also always wants to get back to his cage whenever I remove him from it.

Give him some time to settle in and learn who you are, all the sounds in your home, all the sights etc and keep being patient... I am willing to bet your problem will resolve itself within about the same amount of time as it takes your little fluffer to settle in

I‘d say I’m a good bird trainer, but for tricks, not really for getting them used to me. I taught my cockatiel how to wave in a day and how to spin in less than three hours, birds are so smart. I have a video of my cockatiel Oliver doing some tricks, I can’t wait till I can teach Momo tricks too! Thanks so much for the advice you’ve given me. Your macaw is beautiful by the way!

Aww Oliver is too cute. I am sure you will get to the same level of communication with your new bird (who may interact and give different signs than your tiel) given some settling in and get to know you time.

one of my lorikeets doesn't like to be held, either, but she used to not come out of her cage at all. just keep feeding him by hand, give him treats (I use dried fruits) when he steps up. he will get used to you eventually! he is just getting settled in
also, do you know how old he is?

Just because he's a lory doesn't mean he's a typical lory. Not all African greys talk. Not all hyacinths are "gentle giants." Mine is cage aggressive; even when he's out, he gets grouchy after a period of time. Keep doing what you're doing and understand that birds, generally, take longer than domesticated animals like dogs. Give him time. And accept him for what he is. He may never enjoy a tactile relationship.
