Dolce doesn't want to go in her cage tonight. Sometimes she's just not ready because she wants to hang on my shoulder a little longer. Or she wants to sleep in her daytime cage and not her night cage. But tonight she seems just to want to sleep on the edge of her playtop. Is that ok? I'm going to put some pillows down in case she falls.

I put mine in their cages in case they want to wonder in the middle of the night you may want to put a treat in her cage to temp her in

I don't like letting ours sleep out because they might get frightened in the night and try and flap around the bird room in the dark and get hurt. Occasionally, we've had Cody and Mia out overnight, but we left the light on and it was because they wouldn't come down from the ceiling fan in our old place.

Most of the time, if they were left out, ie Ashlee, it's because we conked out on the couch while she was still out and wandered off to bed without closing her cage. lol.

All of mine also sleep in their cages at night for safety reasons also ... I have a mixed flock with small and medium sized parrots. The larger birds can easily injure the smaller ones. There have been a few exceptions and a couple of my cockatiels have slept outside of their cage, but that's only been a couple of times over the years.

My birds sleep in their cages, except the foster bird I have but shes in our room with no other birds around and she's too scared to venture off right now. Last night I got her to sleep in her cage for the first few hours but then she got antsy and I let her out the rest of the time. But the goal is definitely to get her to sleep through the night in her cage.

I would be leary with doing that because cockatiels are notorious for having night frights. If she is loose there is no saying where she is going to fly or what she is going to bump into.

I really think its best for their safety to be in their cages for nighttime sleep. Does she have a bird cozy to cuddle up with?

Thanks, everyone. :hug8: I ended up putting some pillows and blankets on the floor and letting her sleep on her playtop. Velvet and Blue Bell were in their cages. I never have any trouble with them. Dolce has had a couple night frights which is why a few weeks ago I started putting her to bed in a smaller cage in my room (Her wings are clipped, btw). But this week she's been giving me trouble about going in there. I think it's because if she knows I'm up, she wants to be up, too. A few times I've let her sleep on my bed on a pillow next to mine and she stayed put all night. She just doesn't seem to want to follow a routine like most birds. One day she wants one thing and the next she wants another! Btw, both of her cages have those cajeput coffee table perches. She really likes to relax and sleep on flat surfaces. I had a cozy corner for her when I first got her but she seemed to always move away from it so I took it out.

All of my birds sleep in their cages. the only exception was my amazon Max...he was sooo good. He slept on his rope gym right by my bed every single night, but he never had night frights and didn't get spooked easily. I also kept a night lite on for him.

when we lived at the other house, the bird room was bigger and cages were optional. they were there and opened if they wanted to sleep in them they could

several of the budgies and tiels chose to sleep on their play stand, on top of cages. on the back of the chairs. and they were fine but the main wall was a huge window. and the glow from the street lights were like their night lights.... we'd go in the next morning and they were all still asleep in the same spot they went to bed in.

come to think of it at that house before cages were mandatory(summer time they were mandatory) the tiels never had a single night freight. once they had to sleep in a closed cage they'd get them... Not sure if it has anything to do with cages or not. but the house was the same the lighting was the same, nothing was different other than they had to be put up in a cage at night

Personally I prefer to have my parrots in their cages at night. Not only for safety but also for privacy. I also partially cover there cages and I think that it gives them a sense of feeling tucked in for the night. :)Some parrots can get night frights especially if they see shadows or movement on the wall etc… and I wouldn't want my parrots to get started and fall down in the middle of the night:hug8:

I never let my own birds sleep out but I've seen alot of success with macaws. Frankly if Aros really wanted to sleep outside of his cage I dont think i'd stop him. He sleeps in my bedroom and is pretty antisocial around me so I would think it was pretty unlikely for him to fly to my bed and get crushed. I wouldn't make it regular but if he really didn't want to go back in I dont think I'd fight him.

Some nights I have real problems getting Indy to bed, but other times he goes quite happily, he seems to refuse more since the clocks have changed.
He wont sleep in a Happy Hut, so I went to the website I use to get things for my Chinchillas and found something called a Porthole Cube, it hangs from the top of the cage and he happily climbs up the cage to his "bed bed" and he stays there without a peep, the only problem I do have is when I want to swap it out to wash it, he bites me to pieces.
But maybe this would help.
