Nerd and Ferd bird were two brothers wild caught in the 70s, Maxi Pionus. They lived in the same cage, slept leaning against each other like book ends, and spoke wild Pionus. Ferd was quite gentle and large, Nerd was really skinny, bad feather color, and missing flight feathers.
They only ever got in fights bad enough for damage like once and I never saw what happened but one got a toenail broken so who knows how it happened. Ferd died suddenly about two years in and we both mourned and he bonded to me. He was quite happy to be the only bird with his people after that and was generally very jealous if any other bird showed up for a while. He was happily with me/us for 31 years and was probably at least a couple of years old when we got him and his brother.

I think some people have varied flocks because they fall in love with individual birds or seek a quality that their bird lacks. For instance, if you have a bird that doesn't talk, you might decide you want a grey or an amazon to meet that need or want. I hear a lot of people get another bird because their first bird isn't cuddly, for example. And some, unfortunately, get a smaller bird and view it as a "starter bird," intending to get a larger bird down the line.
