This morning when I went to get JoeJoe out of the aviary for breakfast, I found him hanging on the bamboo. I thought he was playing as usual and took a pic:

He bounced up and caught hold of the swing above him. That's when I noticed his left foot was caught in the bamboo. I tried to release it, but it was his one curly nail which was wedged fast on a bamboo joint/fork. I rushed to get the clippers, but they were too fat. So I got some long pointy scissors and cut away at the tip of his nail. Then switched to the clippers. I was amazed that he let me do all this without biting. At last released! A grateful JoeJoe. I was surprised that he had stayed silent throughout his ordeal.

Here's a pic of the nail before - it's the foot in the water (I had made an appointment with the vet to get it cut):

His toe/foot was obviously sore and JoeJoe was quiet and slept for the rest of the day without eating breakfast :(:

That's the nail now - the shorter toe. I managed to trim all his nails and cancelled the vet appointment:

Poor dude! Glad you were able to free him before he did any serious damage to himself!

Love your photos, JoeJoe certainly looks happy to be free.
My OWA has gotten herself stuck a time or two and I'm always so impressed how calm she stays and she tries to figure it out herself.
My Hahns has a very curly nail on the back toe of each foot , it wants to grow in a circle, and as soon as he starts getting it caught we go off to the vet to have it trimmed.
The position and his temperament make it something I won't even attempt alone, I'm glad you could fix JoeJoe's yourself. He sure has done well with you.

Glad you were there and got him free. Such a good boy to allow you to trim the nail, he must have known he was good and stuck and you were the only way out.
Love that second photograph! :swoon:

Thank god everything went well. Joe Joe is such a good boy, he allowed you to trim the nail. I wonder what Inca would have done.

I think he was trying to free himself by biting the bamboo off by all the pieces around him on the floor.

A few of JoeJoe’s nails are very curly too which I didn’t want to attempt myself, hence the vet visit. The vet forgot the offending nail on the last visit.

I’ve been desensitising JoeJoe to the clippers for the last two weeks as he was afraid of them - with the idea of maybe being able to clip them myself in the future using positive reinforcement. Maybe that helped somewhat. Fingers crossed it’s now short enough to get naturally worn down by climbing around.

That's a great idea. Which clippers do you use? I'll also start this.

Sumita, here are the clippers and long toenail scissors I use:

You can see them in action/size compared to nails here:

Here's JoeJoe just now. At least he was eager to get back into the aviary:

His foot feels slightly warmer than the other one, so maybe some inflammation still.
Get well soon, poor baby!

He looks pretty happy to be rescued by mom and it's great he stayed calm and waited for help, plus was trying to figure it out himself.
Nerd bird would get into trouble and logic the problem out himself many times too. I used to sneak up on him when he was hanging on the side of the cage and snip the long nails quick before he noticed.

Thanks, Terry. Good idea re clipping the long nails while he was hanging on the side of the cage.
I’m wondering if JoeJoe will now allow me to clip his whilst in the aviary since I was able to quickly clip the rest of them using fun, skritching and attention as distraction after the “caught” episode.
