We got a now 23 day old cockatiel. We just started feeding a21 nutribird 3 days ago. He is doing this sound for overnight now. Should I be worried?

Hello, everybody!!! For some reason, I didn’t get the alert that you have replied. Nevertheless, I am very grateful. We rushed him to the vet when it didn’t improve for the whole day. We found out that the clicking noise is more of a gurgling noise coming from his sour crop. Vet flushed it out. Now, we’re home worrying on the recovery because he lost weight. Vet said to expect it but can’t help but be worried. We are prescribed metrodonizale and apple sauce to water 1:1 formula for 5 days.

I AM NOW JUST IN WORRY MODE for his recovery period because he has lost weight.

We keep the humidity 55% above at 32 degrees celcius. He is comfy.

1st day:

12nn - sour crop flush

2:30PM - went back home and he was hungry well since 12nn even before sour crop flush. To be safe, we fed him 1:3 applesauce/water ratio.

3:30PM - crop emptied!! Woohoo! We followed the 1:1 applesauce water ratio

8:30PM - it’s 5 hours now by this time but crop is still not completely empty. I took a photo of every hour though and I saw it slowly deflating by the hour. However, we still have around 1/8 of squishy water crop there. And he is hungry!!!! Called their ER vet and was advise to administer the antibiotic and just 1cc of formula for sustenance. If crop doesn’t empty tomorrow morning, we should come back.

2nd day:

7AM - crop emptied!!! Hallelujah, hallelujah! But he lost 9 grams weight. I was so stick to my stomach. I think my message was so panicky to the vet receptionist that the vet who was on leave called me himself. He assured me that it’s fine to lose weight and it is expected. Weight can easily gain back once the chick is healthy. Worry to stabilize the crop first. Massage the crop upwards going to the proventiculus. Poop is darker green but no bubbles. Still has a good feeding reflex aka just put your finger in his mouth and he’ll be in feeding mode. Do not increase cc unless crop completely emptied.

Well, crop emptied so we did 2cc feed. Unfortunately, crop did not completely empty every 2-3 hours. A bit of lump say 1/8 of watery squish was left. We were only able to do 13cc feeding all throughout the day until 12:30am every 2-3 hours / 7 feedings.

3rd day which is today:

7AM: lost another 7 grams. It is to be expected as we only had 13cc feeding. Felt sick to the stomach. I wanted to vomit and just cry again. He poops back to the lighter green though. Fed him his antibiotics and 2cc. Before I make the panic call the vet, I remembered vet’s advise to massage. I messaged very gently for 20 minutes, pausing and cuddling his chin at the same time coz he likes that. Crop completely deflated and emptied.

8AM: as vet’s advise the day before is that we can increase cc as long as crop empties. We did the 3cc.

  • massages in between. Just keep massaging and cuddling oh so gently -

10AM: after 2 hours, crop emptied. Increased it to 4cc.

We just hope we can do 28cc feeding for the whole day (70 grams usual weight so 10% of his body weight is 7 grams. 7 grams x 4 times feeding as recommended for his age). We will stick with 4cc every feeding for this day.

  • gentle massage and cuddles -

12:30am: crop finally deflated with just like 1/16 there if he is sitted upright but totally deflated when you turn him. Did 4cc.

And now we wait for the next feeding.

As we wait, just to share the story that this is completely our inexperienced hand feeding mistake. We fed too thick and too much. We got the babe at 20 day old from the breeder’s nest. The breeder and the parents co-feed. We received the chick with super full hard crop as it was just fed by the parents. The breeder said to feed it only the next day. We fed it at 7am the next day too eagerly. It still had 1/4 food in there. We did the full 10ml which fudge, maybe we should have just done 3-5ml at first. We tried following the a21 nutribird formula of 1 is to 2-2.5 water but found that thick even on boiling water mixed (we feed at 38-40 degrees temp). We tried 1 is to 3.5-4 water. Apparently this is still too thick even if it’s yoghurt consistency. Vet advised should be milky. Breeder didn’t teach us of the milkiness for a21 nutribird as he uses his homemade formula. On the 2nd day, it was already making the gurgling / clicking noise without him moving. We rushed it to the vet the next day when there was no improvement.

Anyway, NOW that we are on recovery period, I am so worried sick. I’m just afraid it will drop dead with weight loss. I keep repeating to myself “stabilize the crop first, stabilize the crop first”. We go back to the vet for follow-up on April 17. Must keep the baby alive.

For update, just so if anyone is reading this or will read this in emergency times…

3:30PM - his crop emptied again after 3 hours with 4cc applesauce:water, 1:1 solution + gentle crop massages in between. I think we’re out of the woods. Whew. Like I feel relieved now that we will actually recover from this since he is showing so much progress and vigor (he really is screaming to be fed). We will maintain the 4cc every feeding today until we complete 28cc. This is our 3rd day of recovery.

For 4th and 5th day, we will try to increase to 7cc gradually as long as he has good empty crop responses. On 6th day, we will re-introduce a21 nutribird formula slowly like 1/4 a21 nutribird + 3/4 apple sauce and so on until we’re back to a21 nutribird.

We have a follow up check up on April 17. Hope we’re cleared with sour crop by then. He’ll get x-rayed just for the lungs also.

humidity 55%
Ideal humidity is 60-65%

Unfortunately, crop did not completely empty every 2-3 hours
Is this something as part of the crop treatment?
If it wasn't for the sour crop, you would only need the crop to completely empty once per 24 hours (at night). The rest of the time, you would feed when the crop has a little in there but almost empty.
Maybe the vet is telling you to allow to completely empty to be sure the sour crop gets fixed.

Vet advised should be milky.
Formula for chicks should be thick but runny. So nice and thick like pudding or sauce, but it will run off the spoon (though not fast) when you tip it.
If the formula is too thin, it can cause malnourishment and weight loss.

Glad your bird is getting better. Hopefully their weight starts to increase too soon :fingerscrossed: :)

I believe he wants to make sure that crop is working so he wants it emptied before we fed

This is how we did our formula before but he got sour crop. last night, I have started to feel his keel bone (applesauce and water ain’t that nutritious), our vet gave the approval to start mixing in our formula powder to the applesauce solution slowly transitioning back to formula throughout day 4 but still make it diluted
