It is with great pleasure that I announce the
Celebirdy for the month of September 2023
@owlsthetic 's Sonny
1. How did you acquire your bird?
From a breeder I found off Kijiji, Sonny was actually shipped to me from Toronto, which I was very very nervous about but he was completely unfazed it seems and was even vocalizing inside his completely dark carrier on the way home from the airport
2. What is your bird's name, species, age and sex?
Sonny, he's a male green cheek conure (suncheek mutation) and he's 8 months old currently
3. Does your bird do any special tricks?
He knows how to spin, hand tunnel and recall. Currently still working on fetch, he still doesn't quite get what gets him the treat yet so he's either dropping the ball into my hand or on the ground with a 50% success rate
4. What are some of your bird's favorite foods?
Sonny's favorite foods are yam, sweet peppers and sugar snap peas (more often he prefers them freeze-dried), strawberries and blueberries
5. What is the funniest thing your bird has done?
He surprised me and my Mom by landing on her head the first time he met her. My Mom usually doesn't like to touch any animals (she had a bad experience with a stray dog when she was younger) but because Sonny kept going to her and landing on her everytime she came by, my Mom completely fell for his charm and will often drop by with fruits for the fids
6. How has your bird enriched your life?
Sonny is just such a bright spot of my life. Whenever I feel tired at work I check my petcams to see what the fids are doing and it just brightens up my day to see their little faces or antics and makes me so excited to go home to them He has brought me so much much joy and happiness and it seems like there's never a dull moment
7. What would you tell people who are considering this species?
Green cheeks are really fun loving little clowns. They're considered nippier birds and I definitely agree with that, especially when they're overstimulated/excited. Also, I find they tend to get into some mischief from time to time so I keep a close eye on them when they're out lest I find them chewing on something they shouldn't be!
8. What is the activity and noise level of your bird?
Sonny is a very active bird and heavy wood chewer. I was very surprised when the Sola and balsa toys I had put in for Sonny were almost completely gone by the second or third day he was home. He goes through toys so fast that I have taken to making some simple skewer toys by myself now so I can save on some toy costs
One memorable moment for me especially was when I made this forager for Sonny but instead of foraging from the top as I expected he chose to chew some holes through the bottom to get to the treats
Noise-wise he is definitely the noisier of my two GCCs (although Pico's voice is shriller when he screams so it's more noticeably loud but Sonny vocalizes a lot more than Pico during mornings and he also likes to chatter to himself throughout the day in a way that reminds me of budgie chatter
9. What are some of your bird's quirks?
Sonny's quirk is he likes lie down on his back and he is willing to do it almost anywhere if he feels it's a comfortable spot
He also likes preening himself while he is hanging off something
10. If your bird talks, what is the most surprising word or sentence it has said?
I don't really consider any of my birds talkers. Pico does do a vocalization that mimics my tone when I call his name though and that's sort of our flock call now so Sonny picked up on it almost immediately. So Sonny does sort of know how to say Pico's name
11. What is your bird’s favorite treat?
Hemp seeds, safflower seeds, millet and nutriberries. Surprisingly he doesn't seem to like pumpkin seeds as he always drops it after taking one bite
