I have a pair of budgies that decided to spontaneously breed they are male and female the female has laid 5 eggs total 2 broke on the bottom of the cage the other 3 she laid in her empty bird bath and has been incubating them now for 1 week since the first one was laid I am tempted to let them alone to see if the eggs hatch or not sure if eggs are viable this is the first time this has happened to me I have bred parakeets before and this has never happened. Other forums tell me to dump the eggs and split the birds up I do not agree with this, I need more options.

Hello Sam,

At one week incubation, you should be able to get a good reading when candling the eggs.

If you candle the eggs and see veins, reddish orange glow, they are fertile.
Yellow, with a small orange yolk and no veins are non viable.

For budgies, you can remove the eggs if you do not want to breed. You do not have to split up the birds. They can stay together and even mate together without allowing breeding. Just remove any eggs laid and also talk with your vet about whether your hen would need any supplements during her laying stages. Some people give a little egg food for a boost.
Personally I think it is cruel to split pairs of birds (unless they are going through a spat and pose a risk to each other) but I also think it is irresponsible to allow the birds to breed willy nilly.

I need more options.
What options do you need?
Are you wanting to breed?
Are the birds at a good age for breeding? Are they healthy?
Post some more info and we can see what is best for everyone :)
