Breeding

Hello everyone!
So I'm not sure is breeding is viewed positively or negatively here, but I was hoping you could help me.
I decided to give a nest to my two budgies Charlie and Sandy, 3-year-old male and 1 and a half-year-old female, about a month ago. The vet said they were both healthy enough to breed, and I've been trying to vary their diet even more, with eggs and some vegetables and fruit in addition to seeds and pellets they already ate. They also have cuttlebone and a mineral block always available, and get some out-of-cage time.

Sandy's behavior is confusing me. I bred another couple in the past, 5 years ago, and I remember that the female took a while to get brave enough to explore the nest. However, once she started, the time she spent in the nest became more and more as days passed, until I saw her mating with the male and then she laid eggs.
Instead, Sandy took far less time to begin exploring the nest, but the time she spends in it doesn't increase, and she doesn't seem to want to mate with Charlie, even though they get along well (they regurgitate seeds and give head scratches to each other). On a couple of occasions, she even lost interest in the nest for a few days and then started going inside it again.
Ironically she was in the nest right while I was writing this, I could hear her "scratching" it, but it's like she's not ready for phase two.

Do you think I should change something, or just wait more? Thanks in advance!

I'm not personally super opposed to breeding, but breeding budgies doesn't seem right given they're everywhere and practically being given away. Even at pet stores, they go for $40, and the two I've got were free, I know someone else rehoming hers for free, they're all over Craigslist... The market is saturated, and there aren't enough homes for the number of budgies out there.

That being said though, I feel like a year and a half isn't old enough - I could easily be wrong though. But it doesn't sound like she's interested in mating either way, the way you've described it.

Thank you for your opinion. I'm not from the US (it's probably obvious considering the way I write ) but the situation is still very similar to what you described, and I agree, that's why I want to clarify that I'm not breeding them to sell the chicks. It would be a one time thing, I plan to keep one of them, give another one to relatives who already have a budgie and, if there are more, give them to people I can trust who wouldn't breed them intensively either.

About the age, I hope I'm not using the wrong sources but it seems to me that the only recommendation is not to breed budgies who are less than 1 year old. I still regret making that female breed 5 years ago when she was barely 1 (due to inexperience I thought she was older), so I don't want to do the same mistake again.

I feel like (and I could definitely be mixing up species on this) that I've read it's best not to do it younger than 2 years old. But again, I could totally be mixing up species on that.

I didn't catch from your writing you're not from the US :roflmao: if English isn't your first language, you're phenomenal at it haha

From everything I have read, a year and a half is ok for breeding budgies. Lovebirds are the same. These smaller parrots can breed as young as 5 or 6 months old (like they are capable) but it is never recommended to allow that.
Focus on getting them eating those veggies :) The cuttlefish bone is pretty useless but nice for buffing beaks so always worth having them. For calcium, you will want an egg food on hand, you can buy them in bags, it is a dry mix.

I plan to keep one of them, give another one to relatives who already have a budgie and, if there are more, give them to people I can trust who wouldn't breed them intensively either.
I have done more or less that with all of my clutches. There was one I had to find a home for after someone backed out, and I did not like it at all, I kept listing and deleting the listing, eventually my neighbours friend took her :)

As for the nest, just give it time. Be sure it is a good size box, and have nesting material she can take up and make her own nest inside.
