Hello everyone!
So I'm not sure is breeding is viewed positively or negatively here, but I was hoping you could help me.
I decided to give a nest to my two budgies Charlie and Sandy, 3-year-old male and 1 and a half-year-old female, about a month ago. The vet said they were both healthy enough to breed, and I've been trying to vary their diet even more, with eggs and some vegetables and fruit in addition to seeds and pellets they already ate. They also have cuttlebone and a mineral block always available, and get some out-of-cage time.
Sandy's behavior is confusing me. I bred another couple in the past, 5 years ago, and I remember that the female took a while to get brave enough to explore the nest. However, once she started, the time she spent in the nest became more and more as days passed, until I saw her mating with the male and then she laid eggs.
Instead, Sandy took far less time to begin exploring the nest, but the time she spends in it doesn't increase, and she doesn't seem to want to mate with Charlie, even though they get along well (they regurgitate seeds and give head scratches to each other). On a couple of occasions, she even lost interest in the nest for a few days and then started going inside it again.
Ironically she was in the nest right while I was writing this, I could hear her "scratching" it, but it's like she's not ready for phase two.
Do you think I should change something, or just wait more? Thanks in advance!
