A few months ago I traveled 4 1/2 hours out to adopt a B&G that the owner could no longer keep. The guy said he purchased the bird from a flea market a couple years prior but that he was around 8 years old. This sparked my interest and I wanted to know more about his past, especially since he's been through at least two owners before me. Is there any way I can look up the letters and numbers on his leg band? What information would I be able to dig up and where would I do the searching?

I don't know a darned thing about leg bands. Removed them from my birds' legs long time ago, but one of these peoples should be able to help you.

Usually there is no useful information found in US/Canadian leg bands. SOMETIMES the leg band will contain the year the bird was hatched. However, even that info is suspect, because sometimes breeders will use a leg band that is a year or two out if date.

If your band follow the pattern below, then the two sideways number would indicate the hatch year. (2004 as pictured)

The information I have.

There is the Leg Band Numbers Yahoo Group...
LegBandNumbers : Leg Band Numbers

Leg Band Registry (new - last two ones have been shut down)
Leg Band Registry

A few places that produce leg bands may or may not help trace the band if it's one of theirs...

Bwa FL 114 is what the band has on it as far as I can tell. He's not too fond of me dragging his foot out.

FL is florida. 114 could be the number assigned to him by breeder. BWA???

So I imagine that BWA is the breeder identifier (initials, aviary, etc) FL is the state they reside in, and 114 is an identifier that the breeder uses to distinguish between birds

I got him from a private owner in northern Indiana, so it would be peculiar for him to be from Florida. That's what I thought too, though.

Is this a closed or opened band, btw? I'm assuming it's closed.

BWA is listed as Blue Broken Wing Aviary in Alabama according to the list here on AA.

If I remember correctly, it's closed. I can look at it tomorrow but I'd hate to wake him up.

Yes, some people have birds shipped in from different states or could have bought the bird in the state where they resided and then moved. I believe that some of the birds at the big box Pet stores might come from a breeder in HI.

It might be worth contacting Broken Wing Aviary. Who knows? They could have moved!

BWA Blue Broken Wing Aviary Fran Whitfield Dothan AL (334)712-0221

There's also a BWA for Georgia...

114 is probably the ID of the bird... i.e. 114th bird bred by that breeder.

Did find a "Bev's Winged Angels", but probably not the breeder in question....

The FL is sideways and it is closed. By closed you mean it wasn't bent around his leg after the fact, right?

Closed is a solid ring rather than the ring that is bent as you described with a small opening. The opened leg bands were generally used for imported birds although they have also been used for domestic birds. However domestics usually have the closed band.

I still haven't had any luck with finding the breeder. I contacted a breeder in FL that has BWA and they said he is not from them.

Short of contacting the leg band suppliers and seeing if they can tell you who the breeder is, you can also try getting in touch with various bird clubs and avian vets in Florida and see if any of them might recognize the band!
