Hello,

I have a 4 day-old abandoned baby buggie bird. I found this baby in the bottom of the cage on the first day, I tried putting it back in the breeding box (Matki) but when I checked it after around 3 hours the baby was still alone in there cold and starved. so I put it in the brooder and have been taking care of it since then.

Everything was fine until today I noticed some bubbles in the baby's food crop after feeding (I am feeding the baby every 1& half hours) I check the crop before every feed to ensure it is empty (I feed with a spoon, not a syringe as I am afraid of hurting the baby or overfeeding him/her ) but today, even after 3 hours, I feel that there is still food in there. I am not confident if the crop is empty or not, and the baby is crying for food.

I am attaching a picture of the baby and the crop. Could you please help me tell if the crop is empty or not? Should I continue to feed the baby bird as usual?

Apologies I missed attaching the picture.

Here's the picture of the baby.

The picture is not clear because the baby is constantly turning and moving around but I can see some food and 2 large and 3 small bubbles.

JMHO here time to get that baby into a avian vet, bubbles in the crop may indicate a crop infection starting or gastric yeast. Better to nip this in the bud before it gets worse.

I check the crop before every feed to ensure it is empty
The crop onoly needs to completely empty once per 24 hours. The rest of the feeds you should do when the crop is almost empty, and just a small amount of food is left.

I am afraid of hurting the baby or overfeeding him/her
The best way to feed chicks is little food and often over less feedings and more quantity of formula. Just keep a close eye so the crop doen't empty completely during the day.

I can't see very well on the picture, but the crop is quite flat (?) so that indicates it is time to feed.

It is important to feed food at the correct temperature and keep the chick warm - don't have him out of the brooder too long as fluctuantions in temperature can lead to slow crop.
If you think the crop digestion is slowing, you can add a drop of apple cider vinegar with mother or papaya cream to the formula.
Some more info on slow crop and how to fix it;
