Peaches is a healthy 8yr old? male, I got them both from the same ???? as 6 mos old. He is easy to manage, will step onto a perch and sometimes your hand. Will capitalize on an open cage door, loves to fly around until he gets into trouble at which time he screams for me to save him, he will run to me to be saved. Yes I do like this boy but he's not very smart when it comes to his female cockatiel. And she is very happy to be rid of him! They do chatter back and forth between the two cages.

Here is the problem, all he wants to do is breed..every 5 mins (year round)! I have never seen anything like this and I've had many animal species large and small all my life! My female is not willing to participate in that activity that often. As such he had become brutally aggressive starting about 3 yrs ago and has bitten off her 3 left toes as she was trying to escape his unwanted activity. I separated them into separate cages, but next to each other. He even got her last toe when he was just outside her cage! I've even covered the part of his cage so he couldn't see her which minimizes his angry yak which scares her to cowering in the far side of the cage away from him. But this year his 'angry yak' is nonstop and then when moved to another room, just screams on and off for hours during daylight (very quiet in darkness). I feel so bad for him (Peaches) he is angry because he is being denied what he naturally wants. Now it's breading season and the problem is magnified! OMG he ends up back in a separate room within just a a couple hours. I now place Peach's in my bathroom w/ lights off; this quiets him reducing his stress from screaming I hope. My neighbors must think I'm torturing's this poor bird as I live in a Sr Housing apt complex.

So what do I do? He's definitely a breeder...does he need a cage full of females to keep him happy throughout the year.... or a separate life with a new owner or w/ a bunch of males. I have always had a pair (of the same) for them to have company and not be lonely. So I will need to find a female to join her, so maybe an exchange in birds as I cannot afford to buy another bird . Anyone that can assist please respond!

Welcome and I'm not completely sure about it because I have all females but I'm pretty there might be a implant or shot he can get to help calm him but I'll always recommend talking to a vet about his behavior first!

How much sleep/darkness does he get? Many people say tiels should get 10-12 hours. You can try bumping that up by 2 hours for 2 weeks to see if it "tricks" him into thinking it's not spring. Also, there's a company called Christine's Chop Shop that sells products like calming cookies that have natural supplements in them. I wonder if something like that might help? Or I have given my cockatiel when he was being hormonal Herb Salad which is a mixture of herbs. They say birds will naturally pick out what's needed. You can find it various places but I believe My Safe Bird Store usually has it.
