Good morning! Although I’m no stranger to owning birds, I am new to owning zebra finches. They are doing great! Bought the female on sale for 75% off because she was all alone!! And had been at that store for over a year. So then of course I needed to find her a mate. They bonded almost immediately. They just started using their nest last night and today i successfully have seen them mate. I offer high quality seed diet mixed with fruit blend zupreeem for finches and fresh greens and millet spray. I saw some stuff about offering more protein. What do you all suggest is best? Thank you!!

you would feed them soaked or sprouted seed, eggfood and greens. you could also offer a dish of pellets like lafeber finch pellets. eggfood can be bought or homemade from mashed boiled eggs. You should feed them this diet for a week or two prior to giving them a nest box. You should also have calcium grit available in a little cup for them to eat. I make my grit out of ground up eggshells and a few other ingredients. I would provide then with a liquid calcium supplement, d3 supplement for a few days when you add the nest and also when the clutch starts getting layed.

Additionally the nest box should be taken as soon as you are done raising a clutch or they will lay clutch after clutch. This species is not appropriate for nest sleeping as it will lead to over population and cronich egg laying.

Egg food Protein is a great offering for breeders. Higgins has one, it's something you can mix with water to a mash consistency.
