Hello,
I have a 4 month old Parrotlet named Norman. I got him 2 weeks ago. My previous parrotlet (RIP Jaydee) was so easy to bond with and in two days, he was on my finger.
Norman is totally different. He sits on the swing and will only leave to eat and drink. The last couple of days, he has been coming down and sitting on the lower perch.
I've been hanging out near the cage, just doing whatever, talking softly to him. Occasionally, I Wil offer some millet and he will eat if my hand is not too close. He was handfed since 2 weeks. He was in a cage with two other siblings at the breeder's.
I know it takes time but it seems in two weeks, he hasn't made any progress. We'll, occasionally, he will give me a glimmer of hope. Yesterday, he started playing with some of the toys. But today, he hasn't ventured from from his swing.
He is in the busiest room so he could get used to all the sounds. I've talked to the breeder and she says to try to get him out of the cage without forcing him and that it could take 3 months. She also said she could swap him out with another one if it isn't working out.
I don't want to give up on this guy but I don't want to traumatize him either. I know it has been only 2 weeks but I would have thought there would be at least some progress.
Is it possible that he could never bond with me and we aren't a good fit? I guess I'm used to my other bird who was so easy and just wanted to be with me.
When I was at the breeder's, there was another parrotlet who was a bit older but he seemed more adventurous. I was choosing between him and Norman. I only chose Norman because I thought since he was younger, the chance of bonding with him would be higher. Strange thinking I guess.
What am I doing wrong? Is there something else I should be doing to ease him into life with me? I find it strange that a handfed bird would be so afraid of hands. But it could just be me.
Would it be horrible of me to swap him out with the other bird I was considering? What if he never likes me?
Sorry for the long post but thank you in advance for your help!
