Hi, I'm Jan and need some help deciding about my CBC. Here is my story below. Any help would be appreciated!

I need help with a decision. I bought a CBC (Seren) from a reputable breeder in Dallas in July of 2021. She will be 3 yrs old tomorrow. We really bonded and she was so sweet and sat on my shoulder and wanted to give me kisses. However, it became that I could not leave the room without her yelling, so whether she was out of the cage or not would move the cage ( it was on rollers) into every room I went in. On several occasions, she would walk into the bathroom if I was in there and wanted me to pick her up. She then bit me on the lips twice when I went to kiss her. Should have known better the 2nd time. Was bitten several times after that as well, on the last occasion bit me so hard hanging on flapping her wings. She would pick at her feathers as well.

I have a great relationship with the breeder and called her and discussed with her thought it was hormonal and Harrison Pellets which can cause hormone levels to rise. The breeder even talked to several Avian behaviorists and suggested was probably hormones too and she bonded with me and thought I was her mate when of course could not reciprocate and started getting aggressive. When given to the breeder Seren would not let go of me at first.. Crushing!!!! A day later put her with a male and the next morning they were sitting together and she has been great since, no longer on the pellets and not picking at her feathers. She and the male sleep next to each other at nite. and play during the day. He is a chilled bird, Seren had an accident when younger and has some toes missing, the male has a deformed beak and both of them have had surgeries and been handled a lot by humans and were hand raised and fed. Guess a little handicapped pair...lol Breeder ( has been breeding for 40 years) and her Vet thought since she was handled so much by humans would be an even greater bird.

She told me I was welcome to take them both back and see how they did. It has been over a month since have seen Seren and have been so heartbroken and crying a lot!!!! Missing the companionship. This has been so much harder than I ever thought it would be!!

Initially when relinquished Seren planned on getting one of the breeder's hand-raised Bourkes! The baby has not been ready until this week. Breeder said to think about it and do what I thought was best behind me either way 100%. If I take them both a little apprehensive about her biting and not sure can go through giving up again. And who knows how she will react now to me. The breeder is probably best to deal with her and her needs she would never sell either one of them. Thinking maybe starting new with a Bourke and eventually getting another Bourke. Heard they are great birds!!! Have always had birds due to allergies with dogs and cats. Hoping no one would think I did not love my CBC if don't feel can emotionally give her up again and cause more trauma. Want to do what is best for Seren that is what we all want for our pets!!! Please need some advice.
Blessings,
Jan

I think that this is a decision only you can make.

You had Seren for a couple of years, so you will have to decide to either bring home her mate too, or let her stay with her mate and not come home with you. I don't think it is fair at all to split the two up if they have bonded.
I can understand that people who are expecting to live with one bird, can find the thought of two intimidating.
I will say this, having had single birds, two unbonded birds and also bonded pairs of birds, having one bird and have one bonded pair of birds is quite similar except vet and food costs. They live in the same cage, so cleaning is the same. It is not the same as having two birds that are not bonded that then need two cagees, double the work in every way.

Something to ask the breeder about is the males beak care. He may need regular trims at the vet, so that is another cost to factor into the decision.

Thanks for replying. Was never going to separate them. My concern is she seems content and not sure if I take her back would/could become aggressive toward me again. Breeder & Vet say it's hard to say how she would react. Its been devastating to requlish her, not sure can go through the possibility of doing it again. Plus how it would affect her going back and forth. Thanks again.... and giving it to God!

No... have not the breeder lives 2 hrs away. Had suggested that shortly after she took Seren back but did not want to upset her. Hesitant to mention again. Not sure she wants clients in her home....closed Aviry.

Maybe ask what her thoughts are on it go visit them and see how they both are with you might make your decision easy

This is simply a matter of baby bird grows up being close to you then gets upset because hormones drive it to mate/breed and you’re obviously the wrong partner.

Learning to deal with an adult bird (who you already know) who now is no longer frustrated and confused as it has a mate will be much easier than going thorough this exact same situation with a new Bourke baby. The exact same thing is highly likely to happen again.

I have a maturing/hormonal macaw who I’ve had to learn to read new signs from and not be too affectionate or hands on with anymore and he was my best buddy for years till he started hunting me to bite me- I’m sure he’d be a darn sight easier when his hormones surge and his mood gets larger than he is if he was no longer only focussed on me.

I really think you should speak to the breeder and ask if you can give the pair a trial run at your place- if your bird is happy with a mate I can’t see that changing, I only see her interest in you and your old relationship changing.

Thanks again for your advice. The breeder told me to take them both home and see how it goes, the mate is a chilled bird the breeder says. Am apprehensive about her biting me. Have had other birds and was only bitten on an occasion. Know birds are going to bite. Taking your advice to heart.

I lost my CBC, Rio, two months back. They're just green mini cockatoos as far as bonding and cuddling and biting are concerned. Rio once latched on my mom's cheek, flapping and not letting it go. But they are the sweetest cuddlebugs. Please bring the couple back and just keep watching the amazing duo. Lots of love for Serene.
