Is my new wooden toy moldy?

Hi, I bought a new toy after a long and painful search after having to throw away every toy that contained metallic parts (as I have no idea whether they contained stuff like zinc or not) but I wanted to ask, does the wood look moldy to you? I am losing my mind trying to find some suitable toys for my canaries and zebra finches in this goddamn country (Slovakia).. I put carton in front of the clamps that hold perches and they like chewing on it. Absolutely insane trying to find a toy that doesn't contain colored wood, metallic crap and other stuff that I look out for.

That doesn't look like mold to me either. Those vine balls often have barky spots like that, even when they have been stripped of the bark.

I agree with the others, I don't see mold. The first picture looks a little dusty to me.

It sucks that it is hard for you to find toys. I don't have finches or canaries so I'm really unsure what makes for good enrichment for them. My only real thought was looking in small animal section (if you haven't alread) and see it there's any suitable for your birds there. I know some small animal owners will look in the bird section for their animals so there can be lots of overlap. Best of luck with it.

I'd you have in pictures of birds I love to see them :)

Yep, I agree with the others, sometimes the grapevines tend to flake in layers as it ages and it can turn grayish/whiteish.

Thank you all for the replies. One more question, should I disinfect them first? I have F10 SC at hand. Just not sure how I would dry them.

What do you think about this.. I think it's supposed to be straw but it has spots like this.
If in doubt, throw it out. Not worth taking a chance. Personally, i wouldnt keep them. Most of the people here probably wouldn’t either.

This one does look more suspicious to me and I would hesitate to use it

You can buy balsa , basswood etc. and make toys for them to chew on. Just make sure its bird safe wood.

Just curious what kind of toys do finches like? I assume nesting material kind of things but I could be wrong.

I found this site sells some toys and bird supplies. It looks like a decent but Unfortunately I couldn't tell you how reputable it is. I know there are some EU pet sites that ship to most places, though I get shipping and duties fees can get expensive.

You might look into making your own toys. I'm not particularly skilled in disinfecting wood but there are ways to do it. Like sticking in the oven or I think some people boil it. We must have threads about it here. If that's something that interests you.

Best with it, I know it can be frustrating

F10 can do the job with wood as well, or?
