I recently discovered my “Male” budgie, Dori, Is actually female… which has left me with a male and female pair. I’ve removed all nest like objects, But how else can i reduce the chance of them getting down to bizniz and laying? I’m no expert when it comes to eggs, And im real stressed if they DO start breeding dori could get eggbound or worse. Neutering has far too many risks for such small critters, Do i just seperate them? They aren’t sexually mature yet (i think…?) and ive seen no signs that say they are. They seem so happy together i would hate to split them up, But id also hate for them to lay. Help :sad4:

Update… I had a good look at their ceres, And i believe Dori really is male, And its Alby who is female… Albys cere is a soft blue, much lighter around the nostrils while Dorians is a pinkish purple, lighter around the nostrils also. They’re both still very young, So things may change… And unfortunately my previous issue still stands; What if they breed :(

Feed a good diet with calcium sources, ensure they get D3 from the sun or a supplement, don't provide a nesting box or nesting materials. Those are the biggest things. If they do mate and produce eggs, you can boil the eggs before they start to develop to prevent having babies.

Yeah dori is female and alby is male I recommend giving dori extra calcium and if she'll eat it lots of veggies with calcium if she lays eggs and be prepared for the spring nesting and destroying stuff my 2 females (I don't even have a male) have been destroying my books trying to use the Shredded paper as nesting material but I also recommend having a separate Cage for if she lays any eggs and doesn't want alby around like if she starts trying to fight with him but the main thing is Calcium and if you haven't already try and find a avian vet near you for if something were to happen like egg binding also they're both so beautiful!
