I’ve recently gotten an aviator harness for my caique and have tried getting him used to it. He wasn’t that afraid of it but was more curious, and would put his head through partially to get treats. However, when I tried to put his head through the loop fully while encouraging him with treats, he got the treat but when he realised the loop was around his neck (and perhaps the weight of the harness also), he panicked and started trying to remove the loop on his own, which resulted in him running around and biting the harness and getting a little entangled. I did manage to get the harness off after a while and lucky for me there wasn’t damage done during the struggle to my caique and to me (he bit me during the struggle but it didn’t draw blood).
While this incident did not damage my relationship with him, and he went back to taking treats through the loop, I think my caique hates having something around his neck.
Any tips on this, or is harness training a hopeless endeavour for me?
The reason why I want to harness train instead of just using a carrier is because in my country there’s a few parrot gatherings around different areas, and I would like to let my caique out to meet other people and other parrots. If harness training is impossible for me, other methods would be using a c-ring on the leg and attaching an elastic string, or clipping the wings. However these two methods have their own dangers and are not encouraged. Thus, I would appreciate any help with the harness.
