I have a 1 year old female who is very bonded to me. My husband and I also care for my 94 yr old father. Both demand lots of attention. My father, of course is not a bird predator but he could never be careful (opening outside doors watching where he steps etc). For that reason I keep her in a large bird safe room and keep her cage door open. I’m retired and literally spend hours with her most days but I can’t everyday. Do I want to get her a buddy. Also I love watching budgies interact. I really really don’t want to risk babies. Everything I see looks like a possible nesting place to me. I don’t have obvious things like coconuts or hammocks but I worry. Could I get a baby girl instead? They could have separate cages in that room but would I need to supervise every free flying moment?

You can get a female for your girl but there’s no guarantee (as with any bird) that they’ll get along (a male is your higher chance of successfully giving your female bird a friend). Females don’t tend to get along quite as well/often as male/female or male/male pairs but it has happened.

Having a male does not mean you have to breed- you just remove eggs and continue on with your day!

Separate cages for a friend and the current bird is a brilliant idea as long as they will both be ok when freed to fly about the room.

I have a mixed flock of male and female budgies. I don’t give them any place to make a nest and it seems like that discourages the females from mating.
