My society finches have a clutch of eggs, and when I checked the nest today I saw that they had hatched.
All four are alive and breathing, but two of them have what I am assuming are over full crops. I’m guessing the parents are feeding them too much. Should I be worried?
I don’t know if they are first time parents.
I will take any advice! I’m not sure how to handle this situation.

P.S. The egg in the photo is infertile.

Your finches know how to take care of their babies. It’s best to leave them undisturbed so the parents don’t abandon the nest.
Please just make sure there’s plenty of good food and water, including seeds, egg food, possibly protein, greens. Mom and dad will choose the right selection for their babies. They are the expert caretakers.

Yes, they have all of those in their cage.
Thank you, that puts my mind at ease.

I'm seeing gas in the Crops...I'm not sure that's normal.....

Egg food can soil and go rancid so easy. I've bought bags before thst were already rancid. Check the colors and smell of it

Will do.
I volunteer at a bird rehab (for wild birds) and I don’t remember ever seeing this sort of thing in baby season.
Then again, we feed them a formula, so it would look different. But this looks not quite right.
:hmmm:

If the little ones have infection producing gas in crop , they will need to get treated quickly, they go down hill very fast

The egg food, if moist, can only be left out a short time. These things do go bad quickly like any high protein food. And once it’s moist in the crop it can also spoil or grow different stuff.

do you have a veterinarian? I would call them on their cell. Yes, I’m general I’ve had best luck just leaving finch babies to mom and dad. But if they have a slow crop for some reason, that needs to be treated.

The egg food didn’t smell terrible. Does bad egg food smell terrible, or just different from normal? I would assume it would smell like bad eggs, but I thought I’d check.

Should I avoid giving them egg food until the babies are older?

I just got home and I heard peeps from the nest, so that’s a good sign.

I am taking your advice about not disturbing the nest. Should I check the nest at all, or should I avoid peaking at all times?

Also, the mama is opening her beak at a constant rhythm, like a metronome. Is this a sign of dehydration or stress?
They have plenty of water, but it’s possible she isn’t drinking.
I would attach a video, but I’m not sure how (is video an option? I’m still figuring out the parameters for this site)
I’m nervous for her.

Sorry if I’m being obnoxious with the questions. This is new territory for me and I’m worried about doing something wrong. Like I usually notice if one of them isn’t drinking regularly

A video of what you are seeing in your mumma bird would be helpful. You can link a video from Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Vimeo or any other video hosting site.

Could the mom be too hot? It almost sounds like she is panting.
otherwise I would be concerned about her breathing or if she has a respiratory infection.

Perhaps there could be something helpful on her website, there are articles about raising finches.
They are Society finches, I’m guessing the info will still be relevant?

It does seem like she’s panting, but if she were too hot, wouldn’t one of the other four finches be doing it as well?
My thermometer broke, and I am going to the store a bit later today. What would be the optimal temperature for the babies? I usually try and keep it in the 70s, but I don’t know what it should be with babies.

I’ll work on getting a video posted.

Gouldian finch info should be quite applicable to society finches. Not perfect but close.
If only mom is gasping or panting, and there are other adult birds in the cage, that does sound strange. I’m wondering if it gets hotter in the nest and this is to be expected? I haven’t bred finches for about five years.

She still gaping today, and when she gets up for food and water she almost seems weak.
:sad1:

The other three society finches sit in the nest with her overnight. They generally seem to take turns on the nest or take turns sitting with her on the nest during the day. None of them are acting similar to what she is doing.

Should I take her in to my avian vet?
I don’t want her to be stress about being taken away from the nest, but I’m worried about her.

I’ll get a video of her poster on YouTube and put a link to it here today.
She’s the one gaping in the photo.

The soonest time I could get her into the vet was 8 AM this morning. After getting the carrier ready, I went to get her and found that she died.
I’m so distraught.
I wish I had gotten her into the vet as soon as I saw that she was acting weird.
