The American
Federation of Aviculture, Inc.
...Working Together
for the Future of Aviculture
If you keep birds as pets
or breed birds in captivity, you are an aviculturist.
What is the AFA?
The American Federation of Aviculture (AFA) is a nonprofit national organization
established in 1974, whose purpose is to represent all aspects of aviculture and
to educate the public about the keeping and breeding of birds in captivity.
According to the U.S. congress, Office of Technology Assessment: AFA is a national
"Grassroots" organization that serves private breeders of exotic birds
and encourages the development and enhancement of captive breeding through its education
and conservation programs.
So, what does the AFA do for
me?
The AFA's primary goals are the education and dissemination of information related
to aviculture among pet owners, hobbyists, exhibitors, commercial breeders, avicultural
societies, zoos, veterinarians, research institutions, the pet industry, and government
officials. In addition, AFA is concerned about the welfare and humane care of all
birds, and promotes the establishment of high standards of avian care both in the
United States and abroad.
The AFA also supports your rights to acquire, keep, breed and sell birds in a responsible
manner. The organization monitors proposed laws and regulations at the local, state,
federal, and international level that affect your future as an aviculturist and the
well being of birds.
So, how do they do all this?
The AFA is primarily a volunteer organization. Our efforts to ensure the future growth
and development of aviculture are totally dependent upon people like YOU joining
and supporting the AFA.
The AFA believes that aviculture is a valuable conservation tool and that the caring
for and breeding of birds in captivity is an exciting and fulfilling human endeavor.
